So I sent my 292 Chevy to the machinenshop a couple months ago. Went by there a week or so ago and low and behold my engine wasn't there. Seems the shop git it dine and never bothered to call me and sold it for the bill. The shop owner is making it right as it happened while he was on vacation. A buddy of mine abd me was talking the other bight which led us to walking out to the barn to his 49 or 50 model GMC pickup and the running GMC 305 V6 in it. He's doing a V8 swap in it and gave me the motor. So I have a complete, running, motor, with a truck 3 speed. And I have an M22 Muncie left over from my days of playin with muscle cars. Will it hook up? Also, my 27 T has a 37 or 38 Banjo rear in it. Think it'll live happily behind it? The car is a cruiser, and those motors only made like 125hp. I am going to build a set of sprint style headers and put a 500cfm Holley 2bbl on on it and a modified Buick HEI so power should go up a hair. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-J320AZ using Tapatalk
I was also curious aboit trying to put a T5 behind it to help that out a little... Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-J320AZ using Tapatalk
Last year: I read comments somewhere about a T-5 behind a 351 GMC V6... Something about the clutch disc center. They took the center out and turned it around becasue of the clearance needed on the flywheel of the GMC engine. He was happy with the results
My 69 had three gas tanks....I kept one full and used it often when I ran out with the main tank. Only used the third tank on trips. Full or empty it got under 10 mpg.......If you do use one, DO NOT let it get hot or overheated....the heads WILL crack......
Any chance of having a link to it? A search for 351 V6 to T5 brought up nothing Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-J320AZ using Tapatalk
Going to replace the water pump from the get go. It leaks a little bit, and run a flex fan as a puller and an electric fan as a pusher, along with the lowest temp thermostat I can lay my paws on. Probably a failsafe so if it sticks it sticks open. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-J320AZ using Tapatalk
Just wait for the machine shop to get you a useful engine. Who / where were they? You're in Texas, IIRC.
Id rather not say. He does more industrial/ag stuff than hot rod motors. And ge is goin to make right. I was $25 into that motor, he's goin to fo the work on a 292 Y block I also have sittin here as a repayment, so we'll see how it goes. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-J320AZ using Tapatalk
Don’t know where you are located, but I will give you two rebuildable 292 cores if you will come get ‘em. I need the space. You get first refusal, but if you don’t want them, next person who responds can have them. PM me with responses. I want them gone soon. Ray
Depends on where you are in a Texas and what value you place on the engine cores........I have driven to and from many times....but Texas IS a big State......however, I understand and am NOT pressuring anyone.....just made an offer. Perhaps one of my fellow Inliners International members will see this thread. Ray
I do appreciate it though. Im in the panhandle. Still a 2 or 3 day drive. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-J320AZ using Tapatalk
Not much modifying to do. New motor mounts, new trans mount add a clutch pedal (which honestly I wanted a standard anyways). Same radiator, had to build headers either way, carb goes in with an adaptor. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-J320AZ using Tapatalk
And that is before adding the 500 CFM Holley Company I worked for in 1966 bought a new GMC 1/2 ton with the 305 V-6. All highway miles, 6 MPG! Jon.
yep the GMC V6 engines where gas hogs. They would out pull bigger engines but use twice the fuel. there was really not much you could do to increase performace or get better fuel economy. With the Hedders and 500 holley you likely will get 2 MPG!
Unless you happen across one of the GMC V-12's, basically based on the 305 V-6, and/or you have some Blastolene background, I'd stay away from the 305 V-6. Even the 305 V-EIGHT is hands down a far better engine than the 305 V-6. JMPO. And, the ONLY way your machinist can "make it right", is to replace the 292 with another 292, and I would't settle for anything less. YOU SIR , HAVE BEEN PLAYED!!!!! Your machine shop is full of crooks. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
I think your kinda going for the “unusual “ aspect and it’s free and runs. I get it. As stated in other threads that V6 has a ton of torque, smooth as glass, low speed, likes gas. That being said, I go with it, especially if you can gear up a little. Maybe a Columbia. You be the only guy almost anywhere you go with one! Bones
I'm actually thinking hook up the big V6 to a T5 5 speed fir the OD, and my Banjo has a set of 3.78s in it. My back tires shoukd be right around 30". Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-J320AZ using Tapatalk
Why not use the Y-block that you are getting rebuilt for free? Wait, just, a, second. I bet they don't follow through once they find out how expensive the Y-block parts are going to be. I'm with 56sedandelivery, I think you got took.
Because I picked up a 30 A 3 window and I plan to put the 292 in my dream car... Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-J320AZ using Tapatalk
could it possibly be......a logy, very unresponsive, low revving, very heavy, gas pig? china will gladly take all we can ship.. They were such an abortion design, that you cannot imagine how GM put a PG behind that lump... It still had a huge, heavy cast iron flywheel with a bizarre flex plate to that...then the later ones for the TH400..got even a more unreliable flex plate prone to cracking from that vibrating lump of a motor.. ...pure junk. ..
