My Model A coupe was made at the end of the production run and it has the indented firewall (pictures). I don't care for it. My first thought was to replace it with a new unit from Brookville. My body has a factory solid cowl and firewall and I really don't want to disturb the existing relationships. Not to mention a lot of work and expense. A simple flat patch will look unballanced because the rib pattern is abbreviated. So my plan now is to patch the late 31 firewall with a section cut out of a 30/early 31 unit. With all the after market firewalls in use out there I should be able to find a cut out in decent shape (I have a want ad up in the cl***ifieds). I guess another option is to simply fill the gas line hole and live with it. But like I said, I don't like the look of it. Have any of you HAMBers faced this situation. What did you do? Is there another option I have overlooked?
Yes, you overlooked selling it and replacing it with a '30 firewall. That's what I did. In fact, I found a really nice 1930 firewall (better than my '31) and then sold off the '31. I was surprised to see they're very desirable. 1930 firewalls are pretty plentiful too so finding a good one isn't too difficult. I'd like to add, I swapped them because my ***le for the coupe says 1930 and I'm picky like that.
why not add a dimple to the other side so it would be simetrical? i have seen some folks reverse the firewall to get clearence too that way there would be a outie instead of a innie looks like a prime spot for a mounting fuel log or other firewall clutter ... good luck
