Thanks bread. I ran a best of 13.17@105 mph at our Run What Ya Brung yesterday. Slicks bit hard and bogged the motor. I gotta learn to work the clutch and I'll get in the 12s.
I made the long trip to work in July. 60 miles round trip, 10 mpg and 93 degrees on the way home. It was loud, hot and uncomfortable as a hot rod should be.
Last spring, I spun a rod bearing at the strip. I should have known that might happen. The major weakness in the 351C is the oiling system. The mains and rods don't get priority oiling; oil goes to lifters before main and rod bearings and it's slow to drain back when all that oil is in the heads. Combine high revs and a stock 5 quart oil pan and bad things happen. After having the crank turned, I added a blueprinted oil pump, oil restricted pushrods, enlarged/matched oil drain backs and all of that. I modified the oil pan to take 8 quarts and added baffling. That started with a hammer formed bottom. I was already running a Pertronix distributor so I added their rev limiter. It's hidden out of sight under the cowl. It doesn't work like your typical rev limiter. When you hit the limit, it randomly steals spark until you back off the pedal. It's pretty slick.

The wife made a decal just in time for this weekend's Run What Ya Brung. I'll end up hand painting it after I paint the car this winter. For now, vinyl will do.

I have roller rockers in my sbc and I'm getting more oil to them than needed and would like to cut it back a bit. But I don't want to restrict the oil to my flat tappets by using those restrictors made to fit oil galleys. Just want to restrict the oil going to top end via pushrods.
Dave, look up Smith Brothers. They have .040 holes in one end and still allow plenty of oil to the rockers. They are high quality.
Dad helped me thrash on the original build back in '99. He didn't get to ride in it then and I parked it in 2000. He moved a pretty good distance away before I got it running again last year. The stars finally aligned yesterday. Dad came by on a day of perfect weather. 24 years after he gave the body to me, he finally got to ride in the hot rod he started so long ago. Every builder imagines what it will be like the first time his car comes to life. It's the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, the reward after countless hours of hard work. I had a bird hit the radiator the other day. It didn't do any damage but I thought it might be time for a grille insert. I used 1/4" brake line for the perimeter. I started out using a tubing bender but found that it was easy enough to bend by hand. I welded a few 1/2" X 3/4" 16 gage tabs to fasten to the grille shell. The hardware store had some light gage expanded metal that looked like it would work so I picked it up. A buncha light welds holds it in place. All told, I had about $15 in it and it only adds 2 pounds of weight.

I changed the cam hoping to get the coupe in the 12s. I gave it a shot at the Run What Ya Brung today. The best I could manage was a 13.20 at 108 mph. I picked up 3 mph so the cam was doing it's part but I bogged on the launch. My kid Luke took a turn at it and, wouldn't you know it, he ran a 12.88 at 109.69 mph! Looks like I should be crew chief going forward.
