Hot Rods 31 Model A Victoria Build w/Pics - Miss Vicky

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by D-Russ, Jul 6, 2008.

  1. Dave,
Was a ride in the Vicky enough to convert any relatives over to the "dark side"?

What are your plans for a new shortblock?

  2. Thanks Martin, I hope the heads will clean up OK. I don't want to have to go completely through them again. I mean they only have 800 miles on them. I do plan to upgrade to screw in studs and roller rockers though.

It's funny you say that, because with the heads off, the short block looks a little like a flathead (size-wise anyway) sitting in the car.

I'm not sure what you're hinting at about the trans Dan, but I plan to run the T5 I've got at least until the hemi goes in. Do you want to rebuild it? ;)

My cousin's wife was definitely into it. She kept saying "I can't believe how fast it is" and I didn't get on it at all. Then she had my cousin shoot pictures of her posing with the car. I think she was already a closet hot rod fan.

On a side note, I have all my old bicycles hanging in the garage and she almost immediately took notice of a custom I built back in college. She thought it was a fixed gear, but I built the wheel using a BMX freewheel.

The motor will be very mild. It's a 66 283 with a forged crank, bored .030 with flat top cast pistons. The cam is a Comp Cams 268 grind. 12-242-2

HEMI, did you say you have a HEMI to install in it someday? Someday could be today. Good luck with the rebuild.

  5. You can be the Jesse to my Morris! Ha!

  6. Yes, I said hemi. :D I've got a 331 extended bell and a 354. I plan to use what I can off both and sell the rest.

Before I started acquiring hemis I had the Chevy short block built because I knew I needed to replace the old one. It's been sitting in my garage for almost a year. That will go in so I can enjoy the car while I slowly collect parts for the hemi. It will likely be a few years, but here's a fun pic for the time being.

Is this a 'plan' starting to come together? I'm with the 37Kid, skip a step or two and stuff a hemi in there! From the front it'll look like the headlights are bolted to the valve covers, can't beat that!
Killer car, keep us updated. oj

    Dave,
You just roll out here this summer with the sbc and we'll send you home with what ever you need for the 354, and of course, you get the good buddy price :) Looks real good man, take care.

Your car looks great. I have a question going all the way back to your first post. What year of rear spring are you using, or is it new?

Without going back through years of posts what did you use for the rear crossmember? Pulling your motor got me motivated to pick up some pieces on my Roadster project that stalled for 4 months, Thanks! Bob:)

  12. It's thick walled round tube with a small rectangular plate welded to it for the spring. Another plate and four bolts sandwich the spring. There is of course a locating pin as well through the center or the spring. If I was doing it over again, I'd probably use a slightly flattened 32 or 33/34 rear crossmember.

You can also get a good look at the crossmember and plate in the pictures of the frame on the first post of this thread.

    Interesting thread, Nice

  14. I dropped the heads off at the machine shop last week for screw in studs, and I'm getting roller rockers for Christmas.

Yesterday I took all the bolt-ons off, disconnected all the wiring, removed the drive shaft and shifter, drained the fluids the best I could and removed the trans cross member.

And today I pulled the short block and trans out. I thought I was going to have to take the grille shell and radiator off, which would have required undoing my headlight wiring, but luckily, it wasn't necessary.

Looks like plenty of room for a hemi. :D

You're like a surgeon with that engine hoist Dave :D

I'd say there's plenty of room for a Double Rocker engine for sure. Nice to see that even thought you've put some miles on the car it's still looks like everything is holding up paint wise and cleanliness wise. Get that SBC back together so you're not out too long and then get that damn Hemi in there when you can.

Room for a HEMI? Sure the block is narrower than a SBC, the heads however are velumptious.

I can't believe that you pulled the engine and tranny in one fel swoop - i wouldn't even have considered it! The least you couldv'e done is to put a shop rag over the VW sign. Bad ju-ju there.
Sounds like you have turned the corner on the hemi thing. Sounds good to me.
    Thanks, oj

  18. Great to see the engine project moving along. You Richmond guys need more cars on the road...we Yankees had you all out numbered on the pie run.

Mine is on the road just long trips with no od is bad. Once I get and od setup it will be n the runs. I don't think I would be called a southern though as I am from Cali.

Dave if you need a hand let me know I know we are pretty close distance wise. I know how some of that work can be hard to do solo.

Yeah that Hemi was all I could turn up in a quick google search. I was really hoping to find something with 6 2's but if you have a folder with them get to it because that one looks weird like it's too far over to the passenger side.

Anyways, I really wish you'd hurry about and put this damn hemi in. I hate the suspense.:D
