Thanks to all for your input and suggestion. This place is a wealth of information and knowledge.

  2. Back in late fifties we had a customer that had that probelm, would not happen for us when testing the car. Finally found that when he dropped it off he only left the ignition key. When he drove he had a bunch of keys on the ring and the weight would cause the ignition switch to break contact. We finally rode with him and the old mechanic was the one to figure it out. Just something to eliminate!!

Tell ya what - I know that this thread is a couple hours old, but I need to make comment on this. My daily is a '48 Plymouth with a 360. We're talking nearly 250,000 miles and fifteen years worth. The worst breakdown I ever had with this car occurred in Dateland AZ. at 11:00 pm on a Sunday night, (we are talking the capitol of the middle of nowhere!!!). The problem? Coil died - two weeks old. Problem? Coil was oil filled and installed on it's side in the stock location! Found out that oil filled coils are meant to be installed in an upright position. If you lay them on their side, the top half of the windings are exposed and subject to overheating! Ceramic filled coils are made to be installed in a horizontal position. Who pioneered ceramic filled coils? Mopar! How did I find this information? By calling MSD (manufactured this coil) and hearing the explanation in a sort of "well duh, we always sell ceramic filled for Mopar coils" manner! The cost of this learning curve? About 600.00 for a 100mi. tow to the nearest town, A tank of gas to ElPolacko to come out another 60 or so mi. to get me the rest of the way home, and new wiring to repair the fire damage I caused trying to diagnose this on the side of the road with a cell phone as my only light! Long story short, make sure your new coil is a ceramic filled kinda deal, cause you just never know when that learning curve will get real steep!!! One more thought, On my forty eight the tank has a two piece affair where the fuel line connects to the tank. There is a pickup line inside the tank with a flair at the out put line, and outside where the fuel line screws in, there is a br*** ball that makes a seal between the two flairs. When I first got my car years ago that br*** ball was cracked, and after about half a tank of gas, I had the same problem you are talking about. As I made a left hand turn the gas would slosh away from that connection and uncover the crack and **** air, shutting stuff down. A few cranks while rolling would re-prime the pump and we would be off. Took me forever to figure it out, and I found it while "improving"my fuel lines a bit later. Ok, that's enough for one day. Best of luck with your mystery!

    Coil is shorting internally.
