I ordered intake gaskets for a Mopar 318, I received steel gaskets. I’ve never used steel intake gaskets. I have an aftermarket aluminum intake. My questions are: -Are the steel gaskets OK for use with aluminum intake manifolds? Or are they for cast iron only? -The installation tips sheet says to use a thin coat of sealer on the underside of the intake ports, should I use some on the coolant ports also? -Should I purchase a fiber type gasket instead? Elderbrock, Cometic, etc? Any insight or experience is appreciated! Thanks Dan
I use them on everything including aluminum intakes. I follow the directions and have never had a problem.
318s always used steel. 360s used the paper. 3m yellow on the cork end rails on block side only, allow to dry completely so they wont push out.Bead rtv between cork and steel corners.
Thank you all. SS327 the only time I use only RTV is if I can’t get the seal to stay put. I thought about copper seal on both sides, but the do I still use the supplied RTV on the under of the ports? I’ve had good results with copper coat but never used it in conjunction with RTV Dan
I used to coat lightly on both sides of the water ports with the ultra black. (Super thin) Ends use the ultra black silicone. Silver paint or copper coat around ports.
FelPro 1243 is the High Perf intake gasket set for the 273-318. It is the printoseal style, and I like to use these with an aluminum intake.
I didn’t know 318’s used that type of gasket. I didn’t strip mine before taking it to the shop some 25/30 years ago, but a few weeks back pulled the intake and heads, just a “normal” felpro. Is there a reason 318’s used them?
I know they were used and successfully. When I've replaced them, I've always moved to the fiber replacements. Just peace of mind, due to not squaring both surfaces and not wanting dissimilar metal contact, even though the bolts are also steel. The others have offered suggestions for ensuring a good seal. Your choice.
