This is probably a dumb question but, I won't know if I don't ask. I have just acquired a 318 Polysphere engine with a 2 barrel carb. Well, I want to replace the carb altogether. Will any 2 barrel carb (Made for Chrysler, it's a Carter carb now)bolt up to it? The carb is stock on the car I believe. Thanks in advance -Bill
You can convert almost any poly, just not the 318. Sorry. I'd PM Abomination. Hes the king **** of polys. If he dosen't know about the carb, no one will.
Since we seem to need this information posted every other day: that's right - you can convert "almost" any poly. Just not the 318, or any other poly A.
Match up bolt pattern and linkage requirements. The are alot of Mopar 2-bbl out there.. And why does this insane 'convert your Plymouth Poly to a Hemi' idea continue ??? I have even had people call to get 'some Hemi heads' to put on their 340...
Why? The response generally is: 1. "Everyone knows that..." 2. "I read an article in "***wipe Magazine that..." 3. "I was told that..." 4. "Well, it stands to reason that..." Single biggest reason: the popular (and completely wrong) perception that there are only 2 types of engines since 1951, A & B, and any "A" parts can interchange - because any "B" parts can interchange. Wait 5 minutes - someone will ask the same question again.
318 carbs are 318 carbs, nearly all can be interchanged. You may have to change the fitting on the fuel line and you may have to plug some extra va***e ports, and you may have to modify throttle linkage. The bolt spacing on the intake mounting is the same on all 318 2bbl carbs. A 360 2bbl carb has a larger base plate pattern and larger throttle blades. A 360 2bbl carb base plate is the same size as a big block 2bbl carb base plate. The 3.9 V6 and the super 225 2bbl carbs have the same carb base bolt pattern as a 318 but have smaller jets. Gene
hes right. nearly all of them ran a variation of the under-appreciated carter bbd. its just an afb with half the bores. i always admired them for their dirt simplicity and ease of tune. they had a long run all the way up to the eighties before efi and the swap to rochesters and holleys. and like he said the 360s used a different carb. still carter in the early days, but i cant remember what the name of it was.
Sorry for the missed statement earlier. 55 thru 58 polyspheres 241, 259, 270, 301, 315, 325, 331 and 354 used the same hemi blocks. they can be converted.
LOL - This made my day! I really dig some of the statements panic makes... and by the way, HE really IS King **** of Polys. Hey, credit where credit is due! ~Jason
...and just for the record, if you need any Poly info, check out the Polyspherical Engine ***ociation - especially the business directory: http://www.geocities.com/polyman64 The 318 Poly Yahoo Group: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/318poly/ The 318 Poly Board: http://www.diamondbackengines.com/forums/index.php/board,6.0.html And while you're at it, check out the magnificent words of fellow HAMBer panic over there here: http://victorylibrary.com/POLY.htm ~Jason
This still leaves room for error. Best way of saying it is....If it has an intake & seperate valley cover it is Hemi based & can be converted, if one piece intake, it can't. From your comment above the '55 301 Chr Poly can be converted, the '57 Plymouth 301 can't.
