I'm in the process of putting a 1941 Dodge PU onto a 1996 Dodge Dakota frame. The Dakota needs an engine change, currently 318 W/5 spd manual 4X4, was wondering if a V6 would bolt up to the transmission? are all the V6 engines the same, those in vans, cars etc? That being said, does anyone know of a list of the MoPar conversion or swap options? Thanks, Patrick
Not sure about the 3.9, however all the MoPar small blocks share the same bellhousing, mounts, etc. The engines are balanced different though so the flywheel and damper are different. Front drive is different than rear drive. Why not stick with the 318? or go 340? the big blocks have a different bellhousing pattern as does the generation 2 4.7 liter.
A 3.9 will bolt up to the 318 trans, but unless it is trottle body, you will have to change the wiring and the computer. If it is trottle body you may still have to change the wiring, but certanly will need a 3.9 computer. You also will need the exhaust from the 3.9. All the other Mopar V6s are different critters, a 3.9 was available in Dodge trucks, you just have to match up the componets to your model year 3.9. Swapping in another 318 will be easier. At one time I was considering going the other way, pulling a 3.9 to install a 318. desided against it, then sold the car. Gene
the 318 in the dakotas used a different 5 speed trany than the 4s and v6 s in the 92 -96 years - I found that out by looking on line to find out if the slant 6 would bolt to the inline 4 - 2.5 in my dakota. The trany numbers differ - they may bolt up but the numbers differ. - Jaxx
The 3.9 IS a 318 with 2 cylinders cut out. You could do the swap, but if the end result weighs about the same as the Dakota, don't expect much difference in MPG, only power. As mentioned, if you are going with FI, you will need all the wiring and computer that is specific to the engine. Better to find another 318, unless you only drive under 50 MPH and don't want torque for the 4X4 driving....
