Hot Rods 32 5W Garnish moldings from UPI

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Human Fly, Apr 26, 2011.

  1. I asked the price for 32 5w garnish moldings from the guys doing the new 5W (United pacific industries). This was the reply FYI.

The interior garnish moldings around the door are offered in Chrome or Black EDP, both are standard height. Chrome will be $450 each and Black EDP will be $350 each. These will be available within 60 days.
Quarter and rear window garnish moldings will be available around August. Pricing for the quarter garnishes will be $380 Chrome, $300 Black EDP and the rear window garnish will be $440 Chrome, $410 Black EDP.

Around the same price for orig.......when you can find them.
    Save your pennies fella's :p

WOW!!! I'm sure glad my 5w came with flawless OEM mouldings. I honestly don't see how the young guys today will ever get to enjoy the hobby like we did in the 50's-60's. It will hinge on settling for something different than the hot rodding icons for build materiel.:(

OR....just maybe....just maybe the young guys will surprise you just yet. I've seen some pretty amazing stuff don by guy on the hamb from sand casting to immaculate chassis to bringing bodies back from the dead. I don't think hand making some garnish molding to combat the prices that everyone is asking is not too far off right? I mean surely there has been more difficult things figured out in order to drive these hot rods.
    :D:D:D

I am working on bringing a '32 back from the dead and I am not alone. We're all on shoe string budgets and the thing that's going to shine form our builds is the ability to think outside the box (the box being the standard of spending lots of money to net results). For me my '32 isn't going to have perfect resto braces and floors...hell I am channeling mine 6" so what does that matter. I am going to have a 32 though so help me god and I am willing to work my**** of to get it and I hope that hard work nets me good results in the end that resemble a hot rod.

UAPAC is doing a great thing restamping a lot of these hard to find parts but if it's out of reach for most guys it's only going to be good to the guys that can afford original parts. I'll figure out how to get some garnish moldings if I can't afford theirs.

Those parts look simple, but there is a lot
of tooling required to make them correctly.

Decent repop parts are not priced by the pound.

A buddy of mine spent at least $1500 just on the chrome work on the set he has in his 5 window. Luckly, the moldings were all there and in OK shape when he bought the car.

Not terrible pricing when you consider what gennie stuff goes for (if you can locate it in good shape).

Could be worse; build a 33-34!!! SAR gets $800 ea. for 3/w door garnish and $600 for a rear window-or a cool $2000 for the 3 pc. set

Yep, theres a lot of 33-34 parts that overshoot 32's in the price field...

I have a set of the alloy ones here, not sure on the fit , haven't tried as yet, but figured at the time ( bout 4 years ago) that they were the only game in town, originals were way over the top and our dollar wasn't helping.

and they are alloy, can be welded, filed, filled etc. lots of man hours to get to those prices.

I guess if your making something for the market, if that is the market price for originals, thats where you start for repop's...

good bad or ugly, at least the option is there.

my first born is 3.1/2 now, doubt anyone would want him!:D

Flatoz, i'd be interested in knowing how they fit once you get around to it and if ya don't mind..i guess even if they need work it's not a big deal, i have no issues with fabrication.
    Thanks,
    Tony

I've seen some of their prices and I would think they would want to recoupe their investment rather than price themselves out of the market. Demand may not be more than supply. Reverse economics?

That is exactly the situation, they want to recoup their investment.
And pay their operating costs. Maybe make enough profit to justify the investment. Just like any viable business.

Until Speedway or Walmart start having them made in China,
    that is what they cost.

  18. I got really really really close on my first try with a tennsmith brake. About 15 mins because I had to keep resetting the bridge. This was for one vertical leg

If I spent a bit more time fiddling around, experimenting and recording my bend losses and set ups I would be able to get it to original specs.
Then with that recorded info it would be extremely easy to have 100 feet of that exact profile. Side and top same same.

Front piece detail is the same save for the extension, weld that on.
    Bottoms look easy too.

The aluminum mouldings don't fit without a ton of no fun grinding.

34 stuff is out of sight so I bought mine in pieces from http://www.iversenoriginals.com/store/index.php He is not cheaper but if you are chopping the car you can buy them in pieces and save a bunch of dough. then you don't have to cut them apart just to weld them back together.

    just another option....

Aren't a complete set of Brookville 3W garnishes in the area of $2200 in plain steel? These are chromed for a little less and there's two more garnish mouldings. If you look at it that way, they're not priced too badly. But no matter how you rationalize it, they are both a lot of money.

  27. I sent that guy a message a while ago, you just reminded me that i didnt get a reply.
Maybe if we all jumped on board and got a sizable order we could get a set cheaper..............just an idea.
Has anyone tried the Tin Man moldings????
