IMG_4915.jpeg IMG_4916.jpeg IMG_4917.jpeg Any one seen these before , odd body mounts on a 32 frame. Poor thread engagement and poor weld penetration. One tap and it falls off. I don’t think I would trust them in an accident.

Not from 32, just from the fab supply house. Don’t look thick enough for the purpose, to me. Even if they had been welded with something stronger than boogers.

What you are showing are called "steel offset-barrel weld nuts"and can be found at McMaster-Carr. Most people would use "weld nut retainers" that allow the nut to "float" to compensate for mis-alignment also can be found from McMaster-Carr.

  4. I’ve used these

On one ride we lined up the body, center punched the body mounting holes (new frame) then cut some 3/8 plugs that we welded into the frame
    Drilled and tapped them

Anthony, Those are the "weld nut retainers" that I was referring to.

Cage nuts as @anthony myrick describes would be perfect , but alas our ch***is is already boxed by a PO , poorly done at that. I think I will get a few 3/8 nuts and chuck them in the lathe on a bolt. Even the frame holes have been hacked and some are3/4 hole out, Jerry rigged very rough home made sub frame ,close enough is probably good enough. Not here.

Could you drill a hole on either side of the mount hole, then use a wire thru the mount hole fish a piece of 3/8" flat bar (attached to wire in the center) in thru the hole you used to get those bad nut plates out, pull it into place, rosette weld the plate thru the two new holes, then drill and tap a new hole in line with the holes in the body.

Thanks @RICH B that’s a great idea. Will give it a whirl . Don’t know how they got the mount holes wrong , but it has a hill billy made sub frame and floor , so anything is possible. When a hole is half a hole out it’s trickier to get it drilled correctly . Some we could drill others we added red paint to the blunt end of a drill bit to mark the correct location till the body comes off… again.

In the past, when confronted with drilling a hole into an offset hole as you describe; I've made a tool consisting of a piece of tube a couple inches long with an ID matching the drill size which was welded to a piece of flat bar. This was clamped or tack welded in the proper location and held the drill bit from wandering into the existing offset hole. Have to go kinda slow with the drill of course.

    If boxed frame ,
Drill it bigger , weld a nut in or
    Like mention previously, drill 2
1/4 - 5/16 each side of existing hole,
Fish mechanic wire to a pice of bar stock
Drag to hole , drop small stick mag
Lift bar stock up , weld threw
1/4 - 5/16 holes , then drill tap body hole , much easer to just weld a
    Nut in & protect the
    threads with bolt
Or cut top of frame rectangular,
    Make a plug rectangular plug,
Drill & tap , or drill hole in the side of box ,
After installing , Nut , Bar stock ,
cage nut ect, then make a plug weld it up finish as you please !

Thanks @anthony myrick , what are they called? We don’t have McMaster Carr down under.

Anthony, get the same nuts from McMaster car for $12.23 for 25 pieces as opposed from monsterfastner 5 pieces for $9.44. I purchase all my hardware from McMaster-Carr.
