How is the cowl vent attached to the cowl?

  2. Dash lever and bracket spotwelded to cowl top.

I should have been clearer. My cowl vent hole has been filled BUT under the right conditions you can see the outline of the hole. If I were to reopen the cowl vent hole, how is the entire fixture attached to the cowl? Is it welded, clamped, press fit?

    There are 3 main pieces
    Door
    Vent gutter
Door mechanism , handle , hing spring leaver .
Originally gutter & mechanism spot weld to cowl .

Then originally there are 3 different cowl doors & mechanism .
    Early
    Mid
    Late

I believe gutters are the same,

But the Doors & mechanism are not
All "3" different geometry on the hinge and lever , handle .

Aftermarket only makes "One "of the doors in mechanism,
    I Believe "Mid" year

There's a recess pressed into the cowl. Into the recess there's a rectangular strip with a U shaped cross section which forms a gutter / seal channel. This is spot welded to the recess in the cowl.

If you look closely at the top of the pic you'll see the surround under the cowl vent door. A channel is stamped into the top, and a brace is spot welded to carry a hinge/lever ***embly to open and close. This is 39, but the engineering didn't change much. Hope it helps.

If leaded small mini jewelry torch,
If Welded, brazed study.. take find another 32
Make a template of top of cowl
& slowly work with Dremel wire brush & the thin cut off wheel ?

If your vent was just leaded shut (like many I have seen back in the day) using the original vent lid, use a propane torch and an air hose. Heat it up just enough to melt the lead and with a blow gun blow the lead out. Just make sure to wear protective gear and watch where the lead is going.

Thank you all for the pics and description of how to go about returning the vent. This gives me the initiative to get under the dash and compare to the photos you furnished.
