I have a repop grill shell that is going on my 32 Roadster. I need to drill the headlight conduit holes and the other smaller hole on the drivers side in an attempt to make it as stock appearing as possible. (see pic) Can someone tell me what size these holes are?

Also I need advice on putting the cowl and grill shell lace on. I attached a pic of the parts bag and the two spots I need a pic of. I think I understand the lower cowl stuff but am not sure how to do it on the top.

    Thanks for the help.

I'm not sure what size the holes are off hand....
and you probably already know this

but I think you'd be better off not drilling with a regular drill bit
use something thats going to leave you with a nice clean "round" hole
or drill it close and use a tapered reamer to finish it off

Jeff Jones has the hood off his 5 window, and 3 gennie shells on the wall. I'm sure he wouldn't mind if you wanted to take some pics and measurements.

Hood lacing, the two metal things go on each end of one side. The top one hooks on right by the center hood bracket, the bottom one hooks on at the bottom of the channel. Cut lace to lengh, put one end on, then measure for bottom length.Looks like you have the rivets to attach welting to metal tabs.Dont know if Im an expert.

  5. Great place for one of the step-drill Uni-Bits.

Best thing going for drilling thin sheet metal.

You can get em at Home Depot and most hardware stores.

It is a Vintiques shell and is marked with a small dimple where the holes are to be drilled. Any idea on the lower hole and what is it for?

The bottom hole is just over a 1/2 inch at .538? and 2" from bottom and 2" from inside edge. I'm not sure what's it for?

I wonder if the lower hole could be for access to the insert bolt/nut?

The lower hole IS for the horn.

On the welting, it would work best to install one end, hook it in the slot and pull taught. Then mark the other end for installation very tightly. Install this end and straighten it's tab. Slide the tab in the grille's slot and rebend tab. I doubt you will be able to stretch the welting enough to slide the tab in otherwise. And if you can, it's probably not tight enough.

Maybe wetting the welting would shrink it tighter? Or maybe it will make it looser? Dunno.

I think I am going to need a close up pic of the top and lower cowl with the lace in place if anyone can get one.

Thanks cj for the the hole sizes.

I am a LONG way from being a expert ... but the hole on the bottom is for a horn. Most rodders fill this hole. When I install the cowl webbing ... I always get the fabric wet. I let it soak for a hour or more ... then I install it as tight as I can. When it dries ... it does shrink a little :) and makes for a even better fit.

I read about the wet webbing trick in a restoration book somewhere ... in the last 20 - 25 years of messing with 32's.

This photo shows a little on how the webbing goes ... :)

Is the webbing on the top of the cowl and grill shell just held in by a machine screw in webbing on either side of the hinge bracket?

Come down to Iowa and I can show you some real Henry Ford welting in it's native environment.

No. The welting kits have some sheetmetal clips with the ends bent over. These are riveted to the welting. You hook one end to a slot on top and try to put the bottom one in a slot there. It takes some planning. I have more of a hook on the top one and pretty shallow on the bottom. I still use a screwdriver to ease them on. I have had to put some shimming under the welting to get a good line up on the hood. Make sure this is looked into before setting the rivets as some adjustment may be required.

I went back and looked more closely at your pics. I think that is a set for an A or something. Deuce clips are flat and you use one one each end of the welting for a total of 4. No bolts are used.
