Last year I posted this.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=444029&highlight=fence+post+tech Kevin Lee had suggested that I look at one of Brian Bass's posts and try to metal finish the fenders. I guess this rainy weather makes me want to hammer on old rusty tin...so I decided to pick up where I left off. I ordered a shrinking disc and DVD and got started. To recap...here's what I started with... Then beat the big dents out with a fence post... and ended up here... They looked pretty good, until I stripped them to bare metal... A few hours later with a slapping hammer and shrinking disc... I was pretty happy with the results...as this was the first time using the shrinking disc. The fender still needs some work around the edges...but it has been a great learning experience so far. Happy New Year! Neal
Very nice Neal! I just made a slapper/ flipper out of an old file today. Now I just need some fenders and some skill! Haha! -Mike-
The fencepost pic caught me off guard I LOL'ed 2 questions? How many hours to get "one" fender to that last pic? also, I noticed you did not sandblast... how do yu deal with rust in the pits that can't be sanded away? Looks great so far
Great job Neal! I've always walked by stuff like that at swap meets but I'm going to take a second after seeing what you've done!
I use electrolysis for rust removal...then treat with Ospho (phosphiric acid). For anything with deep rust pits, it would sandblast before primer. As for the number of hours...this was my first attempt, so there was a learning curve. It probably took 3-4 hours to work out the major damage in the crown...then about the same time working the small dents in the rest of the fender. Neal
Excellant! Your plane ticket is in the mail, and we have your room and fence post ready. The fender pile is in the barn.
