The electronic flasher should be working, that's the point of it. If it needs a bulb load, it's not working correctly. Whose flasher is it?

  2. I can't tell you the brand name right now, but I bought it from Heinzman speed shop for around 30.00.
Like everything else these days I see it was made in China. It did have the ground wire on it as some do not. From what I have been reading all LED tail lights are not the same. Some draw more or less than other brands with some requiring a inline dieode.

  3. Ok all you motor experts out there I fired it up today for the first time and done the run in on the cam. By the time I was done with that the headers seemed hotter than they should be. Did a temp check with one of those temp guns and at the center 2 exhaust they were at 550 and the front and back exhaust at the headers was 300. Motor temp was only at 170 per the temp gauge and temp gun reading.
The motor was pulling 4 lbs of fuel pres per the gauge. Motor sounded great, but I am concerned about the exhaust temp . I fired up my roadster with the same headers and the difference from the center 2 and the outside 2 exhaust was only 100. The center 2 was reading 350 & the outside 2 was at 250 and all this is at 900 RPM on both motors.
    WTF????????any ideas?

This is still a fresh engine, make sure the carb isn't too lean, and put some miles on it before you get to worried.

What do you have the base timing set at, and how much advance is built in the distributor? Were you able to check the total advance at 2500-3k? I too, agree with the fact that its new, and might have some temps a bit higher than normal. Too far retarded on the timing and it will run hot. Also make sure your vacuum advance is drawing from manifold vacuum, and not ported on the carb.

  6. As far as the total advance at higher RPMS all I have is an old school timing light so no. Timing I started out at 8 degrease and moved it up to 10. Cam says 10 to 12 degrease.
Please explain what you are saying about vacuum advance drawing from manifold vacuum and not ported on the carb?

manifold vac goes full advance at idle port vac increases as you open the butterflys i prefer port vac myself

Each guy has his own way that thinks its best, but it will run cooler at idle, and better mpg at cruise with manifold vac to dist. can. At idle, your timing with manifold vac. will include base timing and what ever is in your advance can. Use an adjustable can, so you can dial in what you want. I am not going to start the dreaded ported/manifold vac. debate again.

My experience with high exhaust Temps is retarded timing

That is why the late model cars in the 80's & 90's had severely retarded ignition timing to meet the govs emissions standards and why running temps now in the 200's are common.

Distributor advance should be ported vacuum, not manifold vacuum If it has manifold vacuum it will pull the advance to full advance once the engine is started. Ported vacuum will be from the carb one of the small ports, a vacuum gage will confirm what port it is. Manifold vacuum will probably be in the 16-18 inches of vacuum range at idle. Yes retarded timing can cause high exhaust temps

Please explain YOUR advantages of ported over manifold. Gm engineers started the ported system in the 70's to cut down on emission but engines ran hotter. You will not achieve "full" advance until your cruising with base, centrifugal, and vacuum timing will all be in. Most the the GM stock distributors had way too much in their vac cans. All aftermarket dist have adjustable cans for this reason.

Manifold vacuum will get full advance way too soon, ported vacuum will get a slower full advance, so the engine will run better through the total RPM range

  15. TOOK MY FIRST RIDE TODAY IN THE 3 WINDOW.....WOW!
IT WAS A TOTAL BLAST IF I DO SAY SO........HAVE A FEW SMALL THINGS TO WORK OUT WITH IT, BUT NOTHING MAJIOR. TRACKS GREAT AND STEERS GOOD. BRAKES NEED SOME FINE TUNING AT THE REAR....
NOTHING BLEW UP OR FELL OFF AND THAT IS A PLUS. EVERYTIME I DRIVE A FRESH BUILD I AM PUMPED TO THE MAX AND LOOKING FOR THE VERY WORST TO HAPPEN. THIS RIDE WAS EVERYTHING I DREAMED OF AND NONE OF THE BAD THINGS . IT RAN HARD AND PULLED VERY STRONG. CLUTCH COULD USE SOME MORE FINE TUNING, BUT LOVE THE 5 SPEED AND QUICK CHANGE. ALL IN ALL A GREAT RIDE AND A GREAT DAY.....

  22. WOW! Thanks to everyone for all the great things you have said about this hot rod. It is really hard to think I started this build just a little less than 2 years ago and it has come to life. Seems to me it has been longer than 2 years.
    THANKS TO EVERYONE

  26. Wow, just took a look through your thread. Excellent work and the final product will be one to be proud of. Is this the car your referred to on the paint thread? Single stage enamel or poly?
Still planning to rub through the paint in spots?
Now I'm off the read the whole thread.

Going to be a fun packed summer of cruising for you.

  30. Yes it is the car. It is single stage PPG and if you look at the photos of the paint taken in the sun light you will see where I have sanded through in lot's of places. In the low light you don't see it that much and the car looks black, but in the sun light you can really see it and the blue comes out.
