Have you considered a DeSoto or Dodge hemi from the 50's? Both are smaller and lighter than a SBC,and a lot cheaper than a Chrysler hemi. Especially the Red Ram Dodge. Lots of big trucks and school buses got them,as well as passenger cars and pickup trucks.

Of course,MY first choice for a cherry 32 Ford coupe like that would be a Y-Block Ford.

Looks like F100, not Hudson. Hudson's were more shapely castings. By the Mid-50's (like F100) Gemmer was making the castings purely functional...and lost much of the 1930's detail in the castings.

I may not be remembering correctly, but I think we just bolted a Packard trans to the '53 Buick bell housing in the '34 my brother and I built in 1954. I think we had to use a different pilot bearing and a different clutch disc due to spline differences.

The pilot bearing outer diameter is the same as Ford. I turned the one I have down to suit a gm bearing.

Packard spline on the clutch plate is the same as GM.

Update, I have been collecting all parts needed to get it back on the road. Ended up going with a 58 283 with a Fenton 3x2 as the first adapter I found was for a sbc. I have a couple different sets of gauges to choose from, motor mounts and everything I need to box the front of the frame. Looking at wiring kits now and trying to pick the best one. Picked up everything to rebuild the brakes. Work will commence in the next couple weeks, I'm jazzed. Here's a pic of my buddy around the time he bought the car in 57. I think he has a shiner.

  15. Great find!
I came in a little late on this thread but, in my experience with old cars as far back as the late 60's.
    And I've said this before:
Old cars can tell you what they want to be, you just have to listen.
My take is that this car is telling you it went into the barn to get more HP or because the engine in it was blown up.
It should come out for the reason it went in. Then you have a real time capsule period Hot Rod which is what this whole Traditional thing is about.

    Good luck

Unless a dire emergency--I wouldn't have sold that in a million years.
