I recently bought a duece steel frame and a 32 ford roadster fibergl*** body. I found a couple 9" rearends around town and wanted to know what size everyone has been putting in there car. I have found on the internet that its common for a either 56" or 58" flange to flange differential. I want little gap between body and tire...Also dont plan on having fenders.

You need to mock it up using the wheels and tires that you are going to run, then measure the distance btween the mounting surfaces of the rims. That will tell you what you want to know.

Make sure after you have added your brackets to have the housing checked for straightness. Those welds will distort the housing and cause you headaches with the wheel bearings.

I have used the 57.25 out side width 57-59 ford car rear with good luck the 65-66 mustang 9" is the same width but really expensive when you find one
the maverick 8" is a very tough cheap rear end but gears and limited slip differentials are a little harder to come by
with the right wheel offset any one of these 3 are your best pick

I have the 9 inch Ford under both my 32's.
The 56 inch measurement is nice ... but there are NO factory original 9 inch Fords ever made.

I have a 57 Ford 9 inch under my 3W and a early model Bronco 9 inch under my 32 roadster. The Bronco has the early Ford wheel bolt pattern ( 5 on 5.5 ) which is GOOD if you are going to run early Ford brakes or 53/56 F100 brakes. The Bronco is basically the same width as the 57 Ford. :D

@ago was the 56" measurement axle flange to axle flange or just the housing?

Also I was thinking about a 8.8" from a ford ranger 90-92. Its different and alot cheaper...

If you want to keep a early lug pattern the 66 Bronco axle is a good choice. HRP

I've got a '69 Bronco for my coupe. I chose it because of the 58" width and the 5 on 5 1/2" early Ford bolt pattern...

If you can get a good center section from one of those rears you found around town, shop for a narrowed housing and axles. Centers new can run $1000. I always use 56 inches, mounting face to face for fendered 32s.Your brake set up makes a diffence too. Highboys sometimes use 55 inches especially if you run bias skinnies. Good luck.

    Free,

The measurement was face of brake drum to drum, where the wheels bolt on.
I narrowed mine to 55" on my two 32- 3 windows, works good.

If you want 5 on 5 ½ bolt pattern
Get almost any 9” housing and narrow it to fit some bronco axles ….. New bronco axles are available.
I say this because used bronco stuff is getting hard to find and expensive.

Thanks everyone for the input! I did some more research and considering using a 90-92 8.8 out of a ford ranger. This looks like the best bang for the buck. It's 56.5 inch, 3.73 gears with limited slip.

When we build 1932 frames we use 55" for rendered cars and 57" for non-fendered cars.

Doesn't that limit the tire size and wheel offset on non-fendered cars?
