I bought a Pete & Jakes Bell 4 inch drop axle to put under my 32 Ford with stock frame. I thought I would just swap out the parts from the old axle and try to use what I already have. Well that didn't work as after researching what parts I have the spindles are 49-54 Chevrolet with a bigger kingpin set-up. Obviously the previous owner had bored out the axle and installed the Chevy spindles. The Bell axle has the standard Ford size kingpins so I would have to bore the new axle out and find bushings to work. My question is there any benefits to using the Chevy spindles? Also has anyone performed this modification and if so are there any pitfalls to doing this?
My question would be are the spindles set to the same camber as the Ford? The old axle could have been bent/ made to the Chevy specs.I think I would get Ford spindles...original,or repo, and work with those as far as brakes.
I can’t think of any benefits to using the Chevy spindles. I put Chevy spindles on a Super Bell axle a LONG time ago and as I remember the Super Bell for Chevy spindles had a different kingpin inclination. Re-boring the axle made for Ford spindles may not give you the camber you want. I would call Pete and Jakes and ask for guidance.
Yep, trash the old Chevy spindles and do it right. Use some 37-41 Ford spindles and a matching brake setup. Putting Chevy spindles on your Ford is monkey motion, and that mistake shouldn't be made twice.
May have been done to match the BP of the rear end? If you go with the Ford spindles will you need two spares now?
The Ford spindle is a much better design , they have more " kingpin inclination" than the chevy's ( that's better ! )
