I have a model A roadster and I'm using a 32 ford front spring. I'm trying to lower it about a 1" further then it is right now. I already had the bottom spring reversed so I'm looking at removing leaves. The spring is still on the car, but it appears there are 9 leaves in it. Is that stock or did someone already take some out ? The car rides pretty good right now, I hate to take some out and have it ride awful. Any tips on which to remove so I can lower it a bit without losing my ride ?
I removed the shortest (top) spring leaf. It didn't impact the ride too much but it got somewhat lower. But I kept it just in case...
you dont want to take out too many i took out three and i bottomed out with me just jacking the car up by the axle to get it off the stands best bet is to put a 32-34 axle spindles perches on it and you will lower a total of 4 inches tk
32 springs had 12 leaves and had a big eye for the shackle. A Model A eye is 3/4 and a 32eye is 7/8. The top spring needs the sides beveled to fit in the crossmember. If you are missing the top leave, you need to bevel the top one or make a short dummy so the spring fits right. If you get all the arch out of the spring, the center will hit the axle. I would get a dropped axle or a 32-34 axle.
Rather than take leaves out, why not do it right and de-arch the spring. First be sure you'll have some travel room left. modifing the front & back lips on the crossmember, so you can bring the bottom spring retainer clamp up to the spring without a spacer, opens up more travel room.
You can get an inch by modifying the front cross member. Use a piece cut from some 2" x 1/8" wall tubing to raise the spring pad.
