I have a 31 model a and want to get a gas tank closer to to the pavement without spending the big bucks for a repop 32 fuel tank. What have you guys done. My car is full fendered,
I have a Tanks Inc 32 steel tank that I notched for my quick change. I added brackets to fit it to my 34 ford frame. Was brand new when I built the car, replaced it with less than 500 miles on the car for a tank behind the seat. SW Fuel Sending unit in tank, had an in-tank fuel pump but I'm using that. No dents. Clean inside. No idea how you would get it to BC. I am in Vancouver, WA.
Maybe I need to come and grab it, shoot me some pics and a price. My wife might hug and kiss me if she can see her sister in Seattle.
Here is a peek a boo view of it from the build. I'll send pics of the QC cut out later. It does have a lot of base/clear on it. It'll be cheap. Tired of it taking up space in my garage. Been in a box since I removed it.
Normally I would PM you but it is your thread so here you go. The only issue with a QC and a rear mounted fuel tank is you are going to lose a couple of gallons for the cut out. You can see a couple of dimples that evidence I should have gone just a tad higher with the cut, as I obviously contacted it on a bump with the top of the rear end (prior to installing bump stops). All welds are neat and tidy, the tank was pressure tested and it does not leak. The tank is a bit dusty and you can see how I adapted it to fit the 34 frame, the extra 1 1/2" I added to the mounting flanges on both sides, easily removed with a cutoff wheel and then re-drill mounting holes as necessary. It still has a chrome gas cap and like I said, the sender is in there but if I remember correctly the fuel pump was removed for another project but the mount is still there. You don't have to run an intalk pump but they are very convenient. If you can figure out how to come get it you can have it for $50.00 The sending unit and gas cap are worth that. To be honest, I removed it because I could not hold enough fuel for my blown flathead. It doesn't get the best mileage. The issue was the rear frame horns on a 34 frame slant downward drastically downward compared to a 32. This causes the filler to be lower in the tank than it should be and the result is only about half the tank was being filled. Mounted flat it should hold 12-14 gallons as it was a 16 gallon tank before I notched it. Anyhoo, there's a possible answer to your dilemma. BB
Better hurry, I could go get it and be back home before dinner. Unless Billy invited me to stay for some "refreshments"!
That is a bargain in anyone's book, Billy is giving the tank away if you buy the gas cap & sending unit. HRP
@Bandit Billy, could you please point me in the direction of a pickup (or sender) with a fuel pump built in. I didn't know such things existed that would fit through the hole(s) in a 32 tank, but I've led a sheltered life! Chris
That is not a 32 tank, it is a Tanks Inc tank and they are made to fit them. But that does remind me, I did have to move the sender unit hole over about 6" due to the QC notch being in the way of the float. Looking back, there is a lot of fab in that tank! If I charged my labor by the hour I would need about $2000 for it.
Thanks BB , I just need to get my wife to tell me when we can go visit her sister, (she is the head of the entertainment committee in my life) I can allow myself some artistic licence to fix my A.
That's s***y. I see why you want to go 32 on the tank out back. It'll look right at home. When I was digging out the tank to take pictures I forgot I had a 34 tank brand new from tanks inc. I also notched it for the quick change and pressure tested it. It has never had fuel in it. I changed my mind (common) after preferring the looks of the 32 tank.
No s#/t there! I cleaned up the garage which I destroyed doing body and paint on the PU, took a load to the dump, another load to go to the swap meet in April, a tote full of roadster stuff, a tote full of PU stuff, etc. The gas tanks were in another garage behind the Olds. That garage needs cleaning next.
