Can anyone point me in the right direction to use a original 1932 Ford gas tank sending unit in a modern tank? (I'm using original gauge) I Was thinking of using a TANK INC universal fuel tank #U-2A I'm not to worried about the mounting issue I can weld/fab a retaining plate, I just need to know what I need to do to make it functional Any recommendations or first hand experience. Would be appreciated greatly.
Original was 6 volt so you will need a voltage drop if your running 12 V. Original was on a negative ground system .Not sure how that would work if you have gone 12 volt positive. If your still 6 volt neg ground its just a matter of mounting it.The depth of your tank will need to match a 32 tank if you want it to read accurate.
The original sender was hydrostatic. No electric connections involved. If you have a good sending unit it should work in a reproduction tank if you can make an adapter to mount it.
Correct it is hydrostatic, I thought the same, put it in and done, but have had a few people telling me it won't read correctly but cannot elaborate why
Is the repro tank deeper or bigger? If no, then I can't see why you would have a problem. If it's deeper you will have a few gallons in reserve after the tank reads empty.
The TANKS U-2 is 14 1/2” tall and isn’t full width at the top. A stock ‘32 tank is only 9” tall. You will still have at least half a tank of gas when the original sender registers empty.
The U-2 might be a good choice for your application with the right sender but I have no idea how to get one to work with an original gauge.
Looking at the replacement from Macs Gas Tank Sending Gauge Unit - With Float & Rubber Gasket - 6 Or 12 Volt - Use On Original Ford Dash Gauges Only - Six Mounting Holes - Ford & Mercury (macsautoparts.com) I'm thinking that if there is room (baffles or no baffles) you could extend the float arm length to correct the reading it sends the gauge. Full should still read full with the longer arm but the longer arm will let the float actually float on the top of the fuel as the level goes down.
You not only have to change the float length, the float pivot needs to be at about half the tank depth. Original tank, half height is about 4 1/2". New tank half is about 7 1/4".
Guys, those senders with arm floats don't work on stock '32 fuel gauges. They are a totally different breed of animal.
Might need one of these to put old sender in modern tank: https://thirdgenauto.com/product/19...atic-fuel-sending-unit-adapter-for-new-tanks/
The last two posts in this thread have some good info, the rest not too useful: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/sending-unit-for-this-gas-tank.928148/
