Thanks for the link but it doesn't look like they can tell ya much. I don't know if the vin ment anything other than a number in 32.
The numbers are just serial numbers. The prefix dictates which motor came in ch***is from factory. 18 was the flathead V8, B was the 4 banger. I remember seeing an AB prefix also.....truck or pickup maybe. Steve
It wasn't a VIN number; rather is was a serial number of the engine/transmission ***y-***igned when that ***y was built at the Rouge. The number was transferred to the ch***is when the engine/trans was installed on the car ***embly line. Given the numerous ***embly plants, the size of the inventory float, and Ford's propensity for installing leftover parts in later cars, the number cannot be considered "intelligent"-meaning it ain't gonna tell you a whole lot about when or where the car was built.
The AB means it was an early production 4 cyl car (or PU). Somewhere along the line they dropped the A from the front of the numbering scheme. The number was just a continuation of the numbering on the Model A engines. I don't know exactly what the cutoff number was though. Do you have more of the car or just a bare frame? There were some early parts that can help ID the car as early too. The Front crossmemebr is one of those early features.
I only have the frame. It was a hot rod in the 50's/60's and has had the front crossmember changed to an A already. Oh well at least I learned something.
It is on the driver side rail. In 3 spots. At the firewall, in the middle and just ahead of the rear crossmember.
