I need some advise on a steering column for my 32 Ford 5 window built. I want a plain steering column and am planning on using a C1 Corvette steering wheel with vega box (cross steer) . Engine is sbc and my firewall already has a support tube (see photo) with 2" ID. Suggestions appreciated.

  2. Easy to build with some exhaust tubing or stainless, a couple bearing or bushings from your local bearing house or Grainger. Then cut apart a donor column for the shaft. I paid $20 for the last couple old columns I bought at a swap meet

I’m using a 35-36 Ford column, got it with the shaft, but without the steering box. I’m running a Vega box. Cut the column to length, got a several bearings from Amazon. Cut the shaft to length and milled the end to a DD. Using a 40 Ford ignition switch/ column lock and. 39 Banjo wheel. 6FD74127-07BC-4149-939A-9C5E87E0F082.jpeg

Are you using the hub from the Corvette or do you have some type of adapter? To me that would dictate what to use for a column. If you are using the Vette hub, I would look for something that has the same size Bell and shaft splines. Probably a 49-54 Chevy car would be a match and fairly cheap and easy to find. Maybe even a pickup from the same years would work too.

Here’s a Vette wheel on a column I made out of 1 1/2” SS tubing I got off EBay
I made a Vette to grant type hub adaptor plate
I used a rubber with bronze insert upper bushing and made an oilite bronze lower bushing.I made the little bell using heat and 1 of the adaptor cones from my brake drum lathe 64288AAF-B6F6-4C05-BE16-DE03A709C8F1.jpeg 15CAA4EC-E397-4048-BAF7-6C314BCCD161.jpeg F2A7B1E6-ECCD-414E-BC88-5E29EE0DD463.jpeg
This it operating a veggie box in a 34 ford coupe I still have to shorten the screws

I have a column shift early Ford column and box laying around if you need any measurements . It still has the lock and on / off switch attached .

I really like the “clocking” of those screws! Details count...

Not to criticize but suggest, I would machine that adaptor to flow into the bell.

is it a new steering wheel and hub with the upper bell?
1956-1962 Corvette Steering Wheel Hub (zip-corvette.com)

only saying as if you do have the stock style hub, you can run a the horn ****on and turn signal, as you have the turn signal canceller in the hub and the hole through the hub for the horn contact, which is nice

for your reference the upper columns go 50's chevy to about 68, then 68 to when they go tilt and the hazard switch appears on the column.

all the turn signal switches differ 57 - 68 and 88

IF you fancy a turn signal and horn, I think you need to find a 68 camaro upper bell and bearing with inner shaft - non tilt
weld the bell to some 1.5'' tube that has been enlarged swedged open a smidgers
copy the two bearing grooves in the original collapsable shaft into a borgeson shaft and fit a lower bearing, it works although I done it with a chevy splined 39 banjo.
