No "rope" needed. Let me make some things perfectly clear before this gets any more out of hand or more off topic. This thread is NOT about ElPolacko. He is a well respected guy on this forum and rightfully so. He is certainly the most knowledgeable car guy I have ever met, period. His car smarts are encyclopedic. His engineering skills are near genius. His shop does some amazing stuff in chassis engineering and metal fabrication. They did some great work on my car. His after-market products are impeccably engineered and well built - top of the line. I'm not trying to impune his skills, work or products. He has had a bunch of satisfied customers before me and he will I'm sure have many more after me. I would have liked him to address what I believe to be a steering problem. He didn't.

So I came to this forum for help and have been given some good suggestions to try. I've found that the rubbing tie rod is at most a minor issue. The steering wheel is contacting the column hub and causing plenty of friction. This may turn out to be most of the issue. After I mess with that I'll see if I can get to the adjustment for the steering box to see if that can help. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the link. I'm hoping to not have to go that far but this would sure help.

Bob, You are a Gentleman. Thank you for not letting this deteriorate into a "whine fest". I hope you solve the steering problem and enjoy many years of driving the '32.

Maybe the "settling" that any new car does after it's first on the road has made the column jacket (the outside housing of the column) come loose a bit from the box and slide up? Check at the box to see if that big clamp is loose, and maybe the jacket has room to scoot back down. Might need to loosen the column drop at the dash to get it to slide down.

  6. Bob, you know this isn't the place to air this out. If there was a problem, why haven't you called me?

We never did anything to the Nash steering gear other that to mount it properly to the frame. It was very stiff because it had no oil in it when we prepared the car for you to pick up. I had my guy fill it up, and by the design of the Gemmer gearbox, it takes a bit of time for the oil to work it's way into the roller wheel inside the sector shaft. I described that to you and told you it may take a while to work in.

When we went through the front end, the tie rod was over the top of the wishbone and hitting the frame. We bent and stretched the steering arms to put the tie rod below the wishbones so there was no further contact with the frame and engine pulleys, we also had 1/2" plus of clearance between the tie rod and the wishbones. If that dimension has changed something has moved or failed, get it in here and let me fix it. Simple as that.
