I have been told that somebody is making new driprails for deuce vickys. Does anybody know if that's right? If so who has them? I need 2 sets. Thanks-Mike
That sounds like a fairy tale to me. Wishin' and hopin'. Look at the size of the potential market, development and manufacturing cost, and see what common sense tells you.
I was told that several driprails were available for 32s and the vicky was one of them. Who knows. If you were Bob Drake and needed them for your own car you'd make them first.Right? Still wishin' and hopin' but starting to think I will have to work a rough set back into shape.
Mention the word Vicky in a thread and DRuss is on it like a fly on ****! Bob Drake had a 1934 Vicky and makes a few Vicky specific parts for them - saved my *** on a couple of unobtainium pieces, but i don't think he does anything for the '32 Vicky.
So, what do the drip rails look like? Sorry, not up on all the '32 parts....since I've never owned one. How hard would they be to fab? Tim D.
32 drip rails (all body styles, except the 3-window, have the same profile) are a very complex piece with lots of curves, folds, and joggles. And that's even before you get to the front to back curve. If anybody was going to reproduce them it would be just as easy to make them for all the other bodies as well. And they'd sell a MILLION.
How would they sell a milion sets of 32 vicky drip rails, didn't they only make like 541 steel 32' Victorias...cant see the fibergl*** guys buyin up the remaining 999,459 pairs...probably why ole Drake hasn't manufactured a million pairs of them yet!
I had to make a pair for a 32 sedan a while back. They were a LOT of work, and took some patience! That is why you cant just buy them everywhere, I guess.
I meant they'd sell a million drip rails, for all the body styles. Didn't you read my tip that all the bodies used the same profile molding? And, they made a LOT more than 541 Vickies.
I used the drip rails from a donor 32 mordoor sedan when I did the first Vic. Plenty long and easy to reshape.
I think they would sell a million, at least figuratively, since you could use them to make a gl*** car look right. I would shave the molded driprails and add them (epoxy or something similar) to the body. Many 'gl*** vicky and 5-windows are easy to "spot" because of the 3-window (or '34) style gutters. That is besides the guys like me who are trying to save old heaps of steel. It would make sense to do even if it were available only as a sedan length that you could shorten for other applications. The shape is indeed complex. I wouldn't mind cutting sedans to fit. It is just as hard to find those any more. I don't want to weld round rod to it and make it look like a 'gl*** car. Driprails, hinges, opening windshields. Must have stuff to me. Thanks for the feedback. I have a line and a # for a guy who may be the answer. I will call him next week and if it pans out I will p*** it on. I joined the AVRG, by the way. Thanks-Mike
Find a guy that is converting a sedan into a B-400 and will not be using driprails at all and you will be all set just like me.
Okay fellas, got a private message and checked it out first. This one is good for everybody, not just us Vicky lovers. Call Duane (503) 761-9411. He's in Portland and makes driprails for '32 woodies. He made a rear door driprail for a '32 delivery and will duplicate any body style or shape you need. I'm templating the shape of the Vicky and sending a piece. He will duplicate the details, curves, etc. Call him for your needs as cost will vary. He's reasonable and a nice guy to talk to.-Mike
Duane made the rear drip rail for my 32 selivery. While I haven't seen my car which is still being converted a Kemp's. I did see 2 other cars at the shop with them and they are spot on. Excellent piece.
I think I figured out a way to make 32 drip rails in a cost effective way, just need a small chunk (1" or so) to make the tooling. Anyone got a chunk lying around to donate to the cause?
Glad you found a set DRuss but I think I'm still going to tool for them. I was working towards making repops for around $200 set, $700 to 800 I"d have to agree, you would really have to need them
Search driprail here on the HAMB. I think it was Scooter or someone that did a comprehensive thread on em
I had a different quote but he wanted to see my patterns before he'd give a firm price. To METALMAN: if you do offer sets at $200-$300 please let me know I would get 2 and possibly 3 sets. $700 a set is more than I need to pour into gutters on my projects. Thanks-Mike
Update: Mike sent me a small chunk of driprail and I been playing with the dies to make em... A bit of trial and error but after about 60 hours and $100 worth of material I pulled my first driprail, looks like it's going to work! I love a good challange and this has been it! I was stoked when it came out, finally the Vicky will have drip rails. Just waiting for a die from Mittlers for the little top edge bead. Sorry the 2 pic is hard to see but it kinda shows the profile. If anyone needs a set (any 32), PM me. I thought I might do a tech thread on how I did it too if anyone is interested.
Damn DRuss, didn't take you long to catch this! Thought you had scored a set already. What I'm planning is to sell them in 4 pieces, front, rears, right and left. Plenty long enough for a Tudor, shorten them for a Vicky or Coupe. Easier to ship and cut to fit will fit better I'm sure. Anyone that can weld these on can manage to weld 2 halves together I figure. Truck guys will just need just the fronts. Since I'm basically retired these days I'm not worried about making a killing, just recouping some of my investment (either that or my Vicky will have some REALLY expensive driprails) so I was thinking about $50 a section, enough for a whole car would be $200.
Sorry the 2 pic is hard to see but it kinda shows the profile. If anyone needs a set (any 32), PM me. I thought I might do a tech thread on how I did it too if anyone is interested.[/QUOTE] I'd defiantly be interested in a tech thread on how you did it
Salt Flat, with your skills I could see you using this process to make all kind of things! I'll put a thread together as soon as I get the last step done, just don't start marketing these drip rails, at least not till I get my investment back!
You don't have to worry about that. Ive found that its best for me to stick to the projects here in the shop. Its really difficult to make reproduction parts to fit original cars when you cant personally fit the piece to the car its going on.
I hear ya, know exactly what your saying. I don't plan to get into the reproduction biz either, just going to make a few for guys here on the HAMB to offset some of the tooling cost (time). I did these driprails more for the challange to see if I could, profit wasn't the motive .
Yeps... here ya' be... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=323531&highlight=drip+rails
