Hi guys in my planning i was thinking to mount a Quick change under my ford 29 project, i have a 32 frame with model A cross member, but a friend of mine told me he has a good 1940 rear axle. i know it's 3/4" larger not so much visible for a fenderless project and a big bearing that will force me to shorter the shaft, but what i should do? get it because it's cheap or keep dreaming about my expensive quick change idea? what the performance difference you have noticed? thanks for your tips
A 40 rearend is perfect to put a quickchange center into. An arched A spring will bolt right onto it.
Is a quick change a pipe dream or something you can afford in the real world? Therein lies your answer. If you build the car with the inexpensive axle you can always add the quick change once you have it. ,
QC it's something already planned will take a bit more time to buy not a big issue, but would like to understand if make a lot differences having a QC instead of original axle in performance, or it's just aesthetical things
You can switch the gear ratio easily, but it doesn’t add any strength. Once you find your preferred ratio you will probably never change it again. So, it’s mostly just aesthetic and bragging rights.
40 pickups weren’t open drive. If it’s open drive it is the wider 42-48 style, and I personally think it’s too wide for an A.
I believe the '35 to '41 Commercial is what was under the pickup, here's mine, I may be wrong about the year, according the the 'Green Book' the axles are the same as used in the passenger car
Somewhere there is (and hopefully someone shows it) a chart on 28/48 Ford rear axle widths wms to wms. If you are "thinking" about a quick change later and the 40 rear fits width wise and sets the rear tires right in relation to the body the wise thing is to run that axle and set it up so the quick change center section can be swapped in later without any other changes as the needed changes will already be done. If you never change it you just see more of the Banjo than you would if you hadn't set it up for a quick change from the get go and that isn't a bad thing.
Thanks, now is setted for a qc with a Model A cross member, but i will get the 40 and as you said later will adapt the qc in case
