Thanks to Tman and DrJ for getting Killer and I looking in the right direction for this stuff. Vintiques makes a steel tank...$425 from CWMoss or Brookville. 9 or 10 gallons like original I was told. Tanks Inc makes a steel tank...$595 from Brookville and $300 from here: http://www.srbymichael.com/manufacturers/tanks/deuce_conversion.shtml Is this Tanks Inc the same tank at both places? $300 price difference?!? And the Tanks Inc is 15 or 17 gallons...so if it's 5 or 7 gallons bigger than original does it just go further under the car? The guy at Brookville said the Tanks Inc (that is not the original size?) looks more like an original and is much better quality. According to Brookville guy the Vintiques tank "doesn't look like a '32 tank", "the stamping not as good" and "reveal not as sharp". Anyone have any comments/inputs about this? Those that have bought reprod '32 tanks..where'd you get them and how does it look..pics? Best price I found for rear frame horns is Brookville for $50/pair, stainless rear spreader is anywhere from $55 at Speedway Motors to $100 at Brookville, and rear frame horn covers are $150/pair. Anybody know where to beat those prices? Or anyone on west coast-ish that sells horns, spreader bar, or horn covers? THANKS in advance....
You need to be careful with repro '32 tanks. The cheaper ones are fabricated rather than stamped and don't have the smooth curves underneath like the originals. I would think that the tank in the web link you provided is fabricated, especially as they give a stainless option. I haven't heard of a stamped stainless repro tank.
John, I have a perfect gennie tank(for my secret project) and a Vintique tank on my 3W. That was used cuz I had Jake notch it for the QC, his only comment was that it is a thinner gauge steel than the originals but is like a frickin new tank(cuz it is!). It is dead-nuts perfect to the original. Brookville says that cuz they sell TanksInc. As Eric at So-Called used to say,"the TanksInc looks like your deuce has a diaper on it". Braga(L&L on Fifth St in Highland) can get ya one for $300. H
Thanks for the tip. I have been learning more...somebody else might find this info useful. Apparently Tanks Inc make 2 different '32 tanks...one is an "industrial" one with flat sides (that wouldn't look correct without frame horn covers) which must be the $300 steel one. The other Tanks Inc is a correct reproduction, which must be the one Brookville sells for $595. And they make a poly '32 tank that Speedway Motors sells with a fiberglass cover for it..ehhh, no thanks. One guy said the Vintique tank has a wider lip at the front of it where they stamp their name and this lip can hit the spring pad on a spring behind the rear application. And considering that is where the tank is sealed, trimming the lip would require extreme caution. Looks like everyone that sells Vintique '32 tanks sell them for $425. Vintage Auto Parts has the Vintiques, and the Tanks Inc tanks are on order and they have been waiting a while for them, right Vaphead? Thanks Homeresque...which one can Larry get for $300...the Vintique or Tanks Inc?? He is a great guy...he did the louvers on my '59. And Brookville does sell both, but I wondering if he was just being a salesman telling me to get the more expensive one...
Larry has the Vintiques. Ive also seen the CW guys selling em at Pomona for $300 cash. The LARS price will prolly go up to 400. Ive seen the trim on the lip, its just the excess flap beyond the sealing bead, doesnt affect the bead. I dont remember having to trim any off on mine but thats a model A crossmember. Go to So-Called and the frame in the showroom has a Vintique on it and they did the trim on the flap, its not a big deal.
Heres mine...its a brand new Vintique that I scored for less than retail thru a friend over there. Fit and finish is real good - I only had to trim some excess sheet metal where the two halves meet because of my setup. Rat
I have both the Tankis one and the Vintiques one at the shop right now. Vintiques looks more correct. The tanks one is meant for the guy that wants all that extra cap. It looks OK but not trad. Whatever flats your boat. $150 for the Horn covers from Brookville is the best price I have found. the GLASS ones*****! I would call the quality of the Vintiques tank just fine unless you are splitting hairs and going for a Pebble Beach type build.
I ve got a Vintique tank in the roadster...fits and looks perfect.Paid 425 pounds for it...I dare`nt do the dollar conversion.
I had one from Tanks and it was okay. Then I saw the ones from Vintique, much nicer, looked and fit like the original. I lucked out and bought a factory second (small dent, easily fixed) for $250 at their setup at Turlock. Couldn't be happier unless it was original.
i Bought a Vintique tank for my son's 32, And the only thing i don't like with it is the way the reinforce steel parts are mounted. I think they are supposed to be completely soldered with lead. Not just tacked on
wow they print there name on there.....that*****s, I guess you can hammer it flat or do you have to cut that part of the metal off and reweld a new piece? "Muthaheads"
Thats the top side of the front lip. Unless youre a piece of paper stuck to the underside of the floor panel, you dont see it...unless of course you had no floor, then you could look back over your shoulder and look at it!
