32 grille on a 34 car?????????

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by kikinrods, Jan 9, 2007.

  1. I have been looking for a 33-34 grille for a roundup project and it is hard to fined next to going billet or CW Moss. So i was thinking would a 32 grille look stupid on a 34 pheaton? Because i can buy one pretty cheap from Brookville and be done with it. What is your opinion or do you have a 33-34 grille you want to sell?

I have seen it done and it always looks wrong in my opinion.

I've seen a 32' grille on a 35' Roadster, and it looked really out of place.

Spend the time to find a nice 33/34 grille. You won't regret it.

I'd be willing to bet there's a few for sale in the Classifieds section on here. Check around in there if you haven't already. :)

I tend to agree, but a cut down 1937 truck shell would look bitchen.

I've seen it on a few cars that looked OK, different.

A hoodless hiboy 34 3W with a 32 grill will make you look twice.

I agree with Beatnik, a narrowed 37 truck grill on a roadster/phaeton is killer.

    I got a pic somewhere.....

  8. The only non-stock grilles I've ever seen that look right on a 33-34 are a tracknose (like Pierson Bros), or a narrowed 37 truck (like on George Poteet's '34 roadster in TRJ #18)

A 32 grille shell always looks out of place on a 34...it disrupts the harmony of the lines.

37 Truck shells look killer (Jake's yellow 34 coupe)

I see 34 grille shells on ebay all the time, halfway decent ones usually bring $500-800.

    Rod & Custom a few years ago had a pic of a '34 (maybe '33) 3 window with a '32 shell.
It was in the back in the section where they looked back at old artcles from R&C. They were drag testing the '34. The original article was from '61 or '62.

I thought the car looked good.

I woulda said no way too but you jogged my memory. For some reason it worked on this car but this is the only one I've ever thought looked "right".

In the article it says the cowl was raised and firewall recessed 8 inches - you can see it in the pic. Maybe that's what helps. Excuse the picture quality - a scanner is on my list right after I find a JOB.

I have never liked a 32 grill on cars with the slanted firewall look like your 34. Way out of place.

Here's one in our Royal Shifters group.
It is an awesome coupe but I think the model 40 grille better fits the car lines. The owner dude likes it so my opinion doesb'y count

This was a pretty popular swap over here back in the sixties on chanelled 33/34 coupes. I still think it looks pretty good on a channeled coupe, but not sure how it would work on a phaeton.

The Fordson grill looks pretty good as well - from the side, I think it actually works better than the '37 Pickup. Here is one on a 34 3 window ...

Since you're considering it you must be runnin w/out a hood. Since the truck ones are hard to get as well why not make one that emulates the truck look. I'd think a small gas bottle (argon or whatever), some sheetmetal, a little bit of time, and some photos to inspire. Cut down an aftermarket tube grille for the rest or use some small diameter tubing "V" bent in the center for different look...

Ok, I was just rambling on but it could work. And of course a slip roller would be a better tool than the gas bottle but not everybody has one. The you'd need to make up a hammerform for the face, slap it around a bit...

Shit there I go ramblin on again.

A 33/34 Ford is a swoopy car, so a boxy grille doesn't look right on it to me.

The 32 grill was popular on 33/34 cars in the 60's but it just doesn't look right. Just like a 33/34 grill wouldn't look right on a 32...think about it!

There's lots of grills that will work. Just like the 37 truck grill there are others out there. I've got one that I'm keeping secret til I get my 34 done. How about following Nads lead with the Anglia grill? How about narrowing a 35/36 grill? Maybe thin it up too. Hides the radiator and gives a close to 33/34 look. Lots of options.

  25. A better choice and about same money would be a 35Ford pickup grille shell....
But hell, I have no taste....:D

Here's some pic's of some '33-'34's with different grills. I personally really like the look of a '37 truck grill on these cars. '35 and '36 truck grills also would look good. The pic of the truck has a '36 truck grill.
