Nice stuff. The boys at Cornhusker R/C do nice work. They have built several chassis for me. Bet you weren't expecting to see that nice of a Hot-Rod shop out there in the middle of no-where. I love going out there he's always got a bunch of cool 32 stuff sitting around. Gary

    Part #6

    Time to disassemble for painting!

This is the part that was hard for me after getting everything finally in place I had to take it all apart. This is not the fun part to say the least. I started the complete take down in January. Doug helped on the heavy parts like the motor and axles. After many of the parts were taken off I had to take them further apart as Steve Fender of Ageless Iron Restoration my painter insisted every single part be epoxy coated, primed and eventually painted!

Doug (in the photo) insisted every bolt, nut , spring and part be put in plastic bags and marked even which side of the car the part was from. This is very important!! There were a few parts I hurried through and did not mark and I will tell you later I paid the price. Remeber to always identify every single part and keep organized as much as possible. You can't believe what you will forget in a day not to mention a month or two!!

The other thing you need to do is take many many many digital photos of the car, every single part, every angle even many underneath before you take it apart and during the take down process!! Always keep the digital camera close by and before you losen that nut take a photo of it and the area around it!! This saved us many untold hours as we put it back together. In fact last evening I was working on the brakes and I had my camera there looking how the pedals and master cylinder went back together.

Remeber take your time, mark EVERY single part and take many digital photos along the way. Also try your best to stay organized and take extra good care of the parts.

    On To the Painter!

After the complete disassembly it was now time to move the 32 Brookville body and all the parts to the painter. Again we had to work around the tough winter weather.

I selected Steve Fender of Ageless Iron Restoration (740)622-1664, (740) 502-5454 or (740)622-1457 out of New Bedford, Ohio. Steve has been custom painting for years and is also now a Montana Paint dealer.

Per Steve's suggestion I had built a movable platform for the Brookville body complete with casters on the bottom so we could move the body around. This has really worked out well and by luck it just fit snugly in my trailer.

Once at Steve's we installed the 39 tail lights and started prepping many of the parts for the epoxy primer. Not only is Steve an excellent painter, but has many years of mechanical experience which bailed me out time and time agian on this project!

Here is Steve Fender of Ageless Iron Restoration (740) 622-1664 priming the Brookville body. After the primer we block sanded the body. It seemed we were sanding more than painting but Steve is very picky to get everything just right before the paint goes on. (I think I'm better at building the pallet with casters than this finish work!!) I did learn a lot through this entire paint process.

    Hey Nick,

That is now our official theme song for the "32 Spitfire"!

I can just vision driving it out to pick up a Spitfire pilot right after a reenactment landing!!

Here are the gauges I installed late last evening.

I'm a little ahead of myself here as the painter finishes up, by the way we may have the body home Monday, I will post the photos early next week!!

With Ohio's high humidity levels (70-100%) most of the year, I insisted the inside of the frame needed to somehow be painted or coated to protect it. After a lot of thought, Steve Fender of Ageless Iron Restoration said only for you..... and came up with a neat idea. He would build a pressure vessel and make up a long hose with a specially designed nozzle to spray an undercoating paint inside the frame. We had several test runs before it all worked, and then we pushed the hose through the frame. Once the paint was turned on, we pulled the hose back through the frame. This was done twice on each side, and then we rotated the frame to assure complete coverage. It was a mess at times with the undercoating paint dripping out of every hole, but we had plastic down to protect the floor.

We cleaned up all the overspray and let the frame dry for several days. I just looked in the frame through the bolt holes with a thin light and the coverage looked complete! This undercoating paint really sticks. I got plenty on my hands and clothes, and it would not clean up with any solvent I tried!

Thanks, Steve, for a nasty job well done!
(Here is Steve in the photo ready to coat the inside of the frame)

Beautiful car ... excellent clean work. Those are those Moal airplane gauges correct?

The 4th FG rules ....one of my faves, them and the 56th FG. One of Disney's best logo's too.

    Jerome,

Thanks for the very nice post & photos! Yes those are the Bomber Bezels from Moal and the gauges are from Classic Instruments. I think I ordered the complete set up from Zac at Classic Instruments.

I did a lot of reading and research on the early "Eagle Squadron" and their mascot/nose art the "Boxing Eagle". It's a little confusing but you're right a young guy by the name of Walt Disney designed the later version which I decided to use. I felt Walt Disney's details and colors would really stand out on our Spitfire olive green special blend paint. Maybe some of our English friends could enlighten us a little more on all of this.

Here are a pile of parts (not all of them) that we painted satin flat black. I did a lot of the sanding and used scotch brite pads to clean every part. Every part was completely disassembled sanded, cleaned and coated first with black epoxy primer the painted satin flat black. Some of the parts like the springs were again taken apart and even lightly bead blasted before priming and painting. I really like how the satin flat black and the Spitfire olive green match up!

Here are a couple photos of cleaning the paint out the body holes and reinstalling the brake lines. Hopefully we can get the body home this evening!

We have a lot of things to complete before the body can go on, finish the rear brakes, install the gas line, emergancy brake cable and mufflers. But having the painted body sitting right by the car will give us extra inspiration to keep working!

We picked up my "32 Spitfire" last evening from Dave's at Crowtown Custom Z after he had painted the "Boxing Eagle" and numbered the car. We still have to remove some tape and clean her up for some real photos later on. I thought you would like to see a sneak preview. It's good to have everything back home again!

  28. stunning .....and what an inspiration you have with a Spitfire...a couple of years ago the Battle of britain flight flew over our house and landed at the local air port.. A lancaster bomber, and 2 Spitfires..the next day we pitch up for a look. They took off again, Spits first, both together, circle round and fly back up the runway, as they passing the Lancaster as it too takes off, all 3 circle yound in formation and do a low (as in fucking low) pass over up the runway again.....6 Merlins on full acceleration...a noise never to be forgotten!!

    Thanks Paul & Nick,

I would have loved to see the Spitfires & Lancaster! And to hear them what a thrill!

I'm final fitting the gas tank and emergency brake system. I get it all in place but know I could have done a little better here or there so it's back apart to do it right. (I'm way too picky...just can't help myself!)I will be working on the body the next few days removing tape and putting all the hardware back in place. It's all very slow work now but I really enjoy the quiet evenings doing it. I just wish you all were here so we could enjoy a cold one and shoot the breeze!

    Cheers!
