Technical 32 hood

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Hot Rod Ron, Nov 22, 2013.

  1. So I picked up a 32 hood for my coupe that needs alot of work. I have got the hood separated into two section by taking off the stainless strip down the middle. My question is how do you get the sides separated from the top where the full length piano hinge is? I would like to separate the hood into four pieces so I can do hammer and dollie work on them.

Use a hammer with a drift punch....tap the 1/4 inch hinge rod out....might need some wd40 or PB Blaster to looseen it up....just tap it out.

  3. That is what I have tried and it will not move at all. I do not want too get to aggressive on it for fear of bending some thing.

Lots of oil, then tap the hinge pin out an inch or so, then attach a hand drill to it and carefully and slowly get it to turn as you pull it out, add oil if needed. A tap handle may work at first if the pin is real tight. Bob

  8. Tighten a Drill chuck onto it attached to a slide hammer once you can get onto it.

do not know about the 32's but the 33/34 model the rod has to be inserted and removed from the back not the front of the hood.

The drill does work well, you just have to watch to see if it is trying to unroll the hinge, so forward or reverse and lots of oil is the key here. Bob :)

  13. Acetone and Trans fluid 50/50 - I swear that puts PB blaster to shame.
Now PB has always been my favorite out of all of them until I tried the ATF/acetone.

  14. So any other opinions on this as well. I have had it soaking over night and will work on it today.

If it is REAL rusty take a length of gutter downspout and make a soaking tray out of it. Bob

Tap it out far enough to get a pair of Vicegrips on the rod. After firmly grasping the rod with the Vicegrips gently try turning the rod. It will turn in one direction only. Onced you've figured out the direction then rotate the rod while applying pressure to pull it out it. If You've applied enough penetrating oil prior to attemping to remove it the rod will spirial right out of the hinge.

  18. Vinegar is a good rust remover. I make trays to size out of plastic rain gutter and bond ends on it, pout in the vinegar and soak for a day, wire brush, tap, whatever.

  19. So its soaking now ( not in palmolive) and will try tomorrow to see if it works.

I do have another question about 32 hoods. Are the commercial truck like the AA truck larger and longer than a 32 car hood. I have been doing alot of measuring and I think the hood I picked up is a commercial truck hood.

All 32 hoods are the same, p***enger and commercial. Center hinge should be 32" long.

The only difference in p***enger vs. commercial '32 hoods is that the p***enger cars had a stainless steel center strip and the commercial were plain painted steel. The hood panels are the same p***enger/commercial and came in 20 or 25 louvers with the latter being a lot less common.

Also, the commercial hood latches were plain painted steel and the p***enger cars had chrome plated "heads" on the latches.

Why is the leading edge not parallel? Can't be an optical 'delusion'...

  27. yes. Its just laying on there not fastened down.

The commercial painted center strip being made of steel and painted is correct, but only for the first few months of production, then Ford switched to stainless on all commercial hoods. HRP
