Well put. There are clowns on both sides. I've been in my car and wanted to run over a few cyclists like the idiot in the OP. Also I've purposely put dents on 2 cars that I can think of because of some jack*** behind the wheel. Streets are for both cars and bikes, and if we all followed the rules then this thread and the gazillion others on the same subject wouldn't exist.

  2. insane? that's a very strong word. i'm just very opinionated . i must be doing something right , i have not had an accident in over 40 years

I've followed some bikers down long hills and they get going so fast it's not hard to see how they could lose control. Shame about your deuce. Could have been worse.

    he didn't call you insane.

making generalizations about how ALL cyclists NEVER stop at stop signs or NEVER obey the rules of the road is dangerous thinking.

and to say that cyclists don't pay to ride on the road is very short sighted. I am a cyclist. I ride on the road. I pay to be there. how? i also pay to have FOUR cars on the road.

i know it. which is why i hesitated to even say anything. but some of the words flying around here that are trying to p*** as logic just made that impossible.

ah well, consider me a contributor to the cluster...

There are millions of normal car owners that would say the exact same thing about hot rods not belonging on the roads. Because they've got antiquated suspension and brakes and generally don't stop/handle like the cars they share the road with. No seat belts or air bags!!! No wonder the insurance on a hyundai is so high!!!

Right now you're stomping on somebody else trying to get a little bit of freedom on their machine. And your blinders wrap around so far you can't see your own reflection. I don't think a guy can fully understand his own freedom without being able to recognize it in others. Kinda sad. :(

  10. i must have mis-read the insane part...sorry

but yes, in my opinion bikes DO NOT belong on the road..it just doesn't make sense to me to have idiots driving around in 4000 lb cars on roads with bicycles when the idiot bikers do not observe any rules of the road. rules like stopping for stop signs , staying on their own side of the road , having lights at night , indicating turns. i thought that is why we spent millions of dollars to build bike paths

just my opinion , not reality....that's all i have to say

sorry to rant.....let's go back to the damaged `32

  11. Fourty cars traveling down a small, two lane highway at 10 mph because one of those spandex clowns won't move over and let traffic p***. And this is not just one or two bad apples, every one I see is doing the same damn thing! Share the road my ***!

When I lived in Colorado there was a constant war going on between cyclists and drivers. Had a casual acquaintance tell me that he has the same right to the road that cars do. I told him that would make a great epitaph.

again with the generalizations and name calling. it doesn't get anything solved. when we get to meet in person, call me a spandex clown and see how far it gets you. anyone can be uppity on the web. it doesn't make anything move forward. it doesn't get anything resolved.

next thing you know, people will be lobbying to get fenderless cars off the road. and motorcycles, those things are dangerous...

dude I've been saying that for years but no one gets it. I call it your "social footprint" how many freedoms have you helped take away today?

I gave up, but glad to see at least ONE other person sees how WE created our own problems.

In georgia cyclist can ride side by side. I also see them blowing thru stop signs. I had to stop to let a group go thru, about 40 of them. I can live with them ,because I ride for fun also. What I cannot abide is the constant stream of them thru a stop sign. Dosen't make any difference if they can see for a mile.

Well, in NYC they're trying to add tolls to bridges that never had a toll before to help ease the fare increases on the subway. Try and figure that one out!

I'm impressed how many cyclists/hotrodders there are, I'd call myself one. Both have an appreciation for "the open road".

The damage to the '32 is impressive. Glad to hear the cyclist and the driver are OK, that could have been really bad.

Perhaps we are all Bozos on this bus?
The State of Maine has an educational group (non-Gov)
called the Bicycling Coalition. They have been involved in:
education for rider and drivers, lane marking, route planning in urban areas, and safety studies.
I do wish more states had such organizations.
NH is catch as can...or...off-the-road for cover!
Cycling here is a "high-adventure" sport, just add the cell-phone providers
Lobby to the mix, and watch the numbers rise.
The grey area of "intimidation" by car attempting a left turn...Without yielding to oncoming traffic (one example) always puts a rider at risk, sadly. Opening doors of parallel parked streetside cars...it is a long list of hazards. The bad riders make it tough on every one. Rod owners once found themselves in a similar environment.
Fortunately "we" are blessed by an interested (and often sympathetic) public. Hope that we can maintain this benign view.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that all cyclists are whimps.
We've sent many a man home ****** for that misconception.
Real cyclists love pain...and are happy to dish some out to ****ers who don't take into consideration that we have very little protection while being squeezed off of the road by drivers who don't think we belong there as much as they do.

Anybody ever see a 60 Mile long bike path? Seriously guys it's a respectable sport and it's older than dirt. It makes the world a better place and is a healthy, fun way to get outdoors... even though sometimes you may get caught behind one and have to wait a few minutes to safely p***. Next time you see one, think about it from their side. How ****ing scary would it be if you're out training, super tired, and some jerk starts blaring his horn and tailgating you? If that biker was out of control and in the wrong lane then he'll be responsible, Let's not resort to petty "I don't cycle so screw those clowns" at***ude.

  22. Bicycle on the road is cl***ified as a wheeled vehicle? ***wipe should have been charged with careless driving.....

Hopefully some good can come from this post if folks can keep their opinions in check. It's a fact that bikes are legal on roads, and it's also a fact that bikes can get squirrly and/or go down in the blink of an eye. THAT's why it is not a good idea to buzz them at-speed, honk and yell, throw stuff at them, etc... I have literally thousands of miles of road riding under my belt, and have seen more of this nonsense than I care to recount. I know cyclists who do stupid things, but I've also seen MANY near misses caused by unsafe drivers, most of which would easily have killed the cyclist(s) if they had made contact.

Read the laws - give bikers a wide berth on the road. If you see cyclists breaking the law (riding 2-3 abreast, running lights/signs, or just being stupid), call the cops and report them just like you would for any unsafe driver.

Don't know all the details of this incident, but it appears that the cyclist was at fault... but that would be little comfort if they would have died in this accident.

I love this one.. I respect the share the road montra to a certain degree.. but I think the self-righteous spandex clad clowns that ride in packs are annoying. Single file is the law up here in Maine.. but if you are trying to get somewhere on a weekend morning.. often ya run into a pack of unyeilding cyclists.. I have had some fun with them over the years.. The chevy with 235 and open lakers usually won me the right of way..

  26. Yup, I am disappointed at some of our fellow HAMBers. Their antibike at***ude is as bad as the anti-gun nuts.

  27. Okay, so you're going to take off your little styrofoam hat and wraparound gl***es and kick my ***; and I'm the one being "uppity on the web".

If you recognized yourself in my spandex clown comment then good, maybe now you can get some help for that.

They did a study of bike paths and there are more accidents where the paths intersect the roads than anywhere else. People ***ume that the bikes will never cross paths with a car since they have designated areas to ride.

Here in Bubbaville, I have had beer bottles thrown at me,people trying to see how close they can get to you, just out being hateful. Every redneck thinks they are the first guy to ever try and sneak up on you to scream and scare you. Most cyclists see Bubba in the rear view mirror long before they get there.

Oh and Oklahoma has zero bike paths. We don't even have shoulders. I ride on the white line and usually have about 6" of asphalt between myself and the ditch.

One other thing, it is illegal to come within 3 feet of a cyclist or throw anything from a moving vehicle.

and what exactly did it solve? people love to complain about a problem. heaven forbid they should look for a good long term solution. let's just ***** about how other people do things that annoy us.

i am about done with this one. you'd think that hot rodders would get it.

self righteous? how do you know they are self righteous? maybe they were just bunching up to defend themselves against some yankee hick with loud pipes acting like an ***-hat.

A part of the email my buddy sent:

We stayed off the freeways but were on some of the
loveliest two lane in southern California. We went from Encinitas, Rancho
Santa Fe, Elfin Forest, Harmony Grove, Escondido, Valley Center, Fallbrook,
De Luz, Temecula and Rainbow. The rest of the party went on to the starting
point in Encinitas, but my trip was halted when a bicyclist coming downhill
too fast lost control coming into a tight turn, crossed the centerline and
he ended up in the grill and radiator of my roadster. Luckily I was barely
moving since I was stuck behind another bicyclist who was in my lane and
going very slowly uphill. Fortunately the young man hit my car in the first
place, because had he not, he'd have gone down a sheer twenty foot
embankment to a rock and boulder-strewn gully. Also he was fortunate to
have hit the softest part of my car, and hit it primarily with his shoulder
and not his head. He was unhurt except for bruising and some road rash, but
there were no broken bones. When the paramedics responded to my 911 call,
he checked out OK but refused to go to a hospital for further examination
and was signed out "against medical advice". I spoke to him this evening, a
day later, and he's sore but realizes how lucky he was.
All in all it was another great day in paradise. The car will be fixed real
soon, the bicyclist is OK, and there's another great road trip story to
    tell.
