I'm looking for a better way to route the tail pipe on a stock 32 4 door. I just replaced the exhaust system and don't like the way the tail pipe goes through the crossmember, and around the gas tank. Very tight, and no room to add a rubber hanger(s) to reduce the exhaust vibration. It also vibrates on the gas tank and the floor near the crossmember.

I've used custom pipes in the past, running between the spring and the crossmember but it can get squashed by the spring on a big bump.

How do you hot rod guys do it? Anybody got some pictures?

  2. I don't remember it going through the cross member, maybe that is your problem.

RETRACTION: I crawled under the car today and it does go through the rear crossmember. It doesn't look like there are any problems.

A reproduction tail pipe should not rattle or touch anything unless something else in the system has been changed like the location of the muffler. I have done many Deuces running 2" tail pipes with no rattles. Yes it's pretty easy to run under the rear crossmember and out the rear under the frame rails.

My old Sport Coupe with dual 2" tailpies. There is no hole on the drivers side. No rattles and all suspended from rubber insulated hangers. You need a better muffler man:D

    Tommy ...

How do you get enough clearance between the frame and the axle to allow for bumps in the road if you route the pipe under the crossmember? My rubber frame bumpers are only about an inch below the bottom surface of the frame, and would be at least 2" higher than the bottom of the pipe if routed under the crossmember. I'm assuming you still have the stock transverse spring.

No pictures but the apex of the over the axle bend is obviously centered on the axle. From there the tail pipe angles back down just barely clearing the bottom edge of the rear cross member. That angle allows the tail pipe to clear the rear spring where it can be bent back up to level again. I go over the axle close to the frame rails so that the curved Deuce rear spring is closer to the axle than it is near the banjo housing. The axle will bottom out on the bottom of the frame before it ever hits the tail pipe. I have 4" shackles on my Deuce. Take a 2' piece of pipe and hold it up there on the angle to see where the tailpipe needs to run.
