32 tank in model a

i have a 30 full fendered 2d sedan aftermarket frame. trying to install 32 tank and rail extensions. coilovers seem to be in the way, thought about going to buggy spring. any sugestions apreciated.

 

My suggestion is: don't do it. I think it's an unsafe position for the fuel tank. And it looks like a hemorrhoid.

 

actually i disagree with tgwtc i think they look great, but i have a similar problem w/coils. so i will be interested in answers. have seen a number of threads dealing with transverse springs in fact some one has kit to do this. as to safety think it is better than interior.. someone has told me someone. i think rock valley is doing saddles for A's. haven't checked that out yet. good luck.

 

Seen 1/2" flat bar used to clear coil-overs. Started just ahead of the rear cross-member and attached in an overlap to the rear channel sections. It was cut to shape; but amounted to around 3" in height, plenty strong to carry the tank. The rearmost body mount was modified to work.

Helped a friend with a '31 a long time back, he had a local shop fab and mount a
tank in '32 fashion. This really filled the area that looks so open on the back of a
full-fendered "A".

Ive seen two done both with coilovers. They both notched and boxed the frame for strength.

When we did ours we mocked the tank in place without the fenders & it looked screwy, kinda like a duck dragging its ass. when we mocked the fenders into place too it looked good. Our frame has coilovers and the rear crossmember kicks out around behind the diff. We built a frame section to hold the tank and then put two pieces of 2X3 tubing down from the frame behind the diff.

Worked out really well, the tank fits up really snug under the back of the car. the scrub line is such that even if the coupe were to lose both back wheels entirely, the tank would not hit the ground. The stub sections of the deuce rails are not on the same angle as they would be on a stock deuce frame, they are closer to level . We have yet to modify the frame horn covers to fit the model A fenders but it is on the list of to-do's. There is about an inch and a half between the tank frame section and the coilovers.

I too have done this on my tudor c dan. As others have I bought the repo horns and went from there, the only difference with mine is that I put the rails as parallel to the ground as possible instead of the downward slant 32's have. Read the link Tman posted.
And yes, there is very little room between the coilovers and the framework. I've never had a problem after many, many miles. Have fun.

I dig the look with a fendered car. It looks natural, but what about a fenderless coupe or sedan?
