I prefer the original grill on 33-34's, but I'd like to submit this local hot rod.Built in the mid 60's and hasn't changed a bit since then, right down to the orange plexigl*** roof insert and mag Halibrands (usually on both ends, but has slicks on the rear Halibrands).

It was built for street and strip, and has seen a lot of drag strip miles(it shows)

I think it's an awesome hot rod,but there are a few things I would have liked to have seen done differently, including the shell.

I would also like to add that the owner is now in his 70's and still beats the hell out of this thing at our local drag strip!

Thats No challenge, of course you'll find more channeled model 40's with deuce grilles. It's the easy way out. My point was that there were guys that made the extra effort and kept the better looking(in my opinion) grilles "back in the day"
Also, I'm unsure where these car were from, but I'm not really sure why that matters considering the heavy channel was far more popular as you worked your way toward the east coast(but of course there were exceptions).
This could go on forever, but I'd rather not muck this guys thread up any more.
I think I made my point. To the OP sorry for fouling up your thread, good luck with mating the wrong hood to the wrong grille, I hope you prove me wrong. I'm not saying any of this to be a ****(Im no keyboard commando), or to knock your car(at least yours is road worthy and driving unlike my 34). I just kind of think of the HAMB as one big garage and one big bench racing session, and I'm not saying anything I wouldn't say to my BEST bro if we were debating this in the garage about his car.

Last post in this thread(I hope),

A thought, I used to work at a pretty big name Hot Rod & Custom shop in Escondido, We did alot of business with Rootlieb, if I were working in the industry still and trying to make the customer happy, I'd buy a Rootlieb one piece 34 hood top, and a 32 on piece hood top, and mate them together. Relief cut or pie cut as needed. That way you have plenty of extra meat for the extra lenght needed. then hold it down with the hood strap kit from limeworks.

My '34 history: A man named Newman in Knoxville, TN owned the car in the mid '50s. ****ey George owned it from 59-60 and then Roy Capps from 60-64. Roy Summers traded a 55 Chev and $500 for the car in 1964. Summers owned the car for 38 yrs. I bought the car in 2002 after the Shades of the Past Rod Run in Pigeon Forge, TN. Several individuals in the Knoxville area modified the car during this time. Jerry Sims filled the top. Wendy York did the gl*** work. H.E. Bernard did the front and rear Z and ch***is for the channel. Floor pan was done by Buster Dobbs and upholstery by Robert Alvis. Edward Jones did the engine work. The car was street driven and drag raced under the sponsorshiip of Thompson Auto Care.

The car ran a '64 Corvette 283 bored "40 over" with 327 forged truck pistons and Holley 750 a T-10 four speed and a '55 Chev rear end. The paint is 1955 Chrysler Teal Green and needs to be redone. The teeth for the grill were fabricated from 1/8 inch steel in 1965. I have just recently pulled the tired drive train. It now has a 350 SBC/350 Turbo and a 9" Bronco rear end.

The wheel based was stretched about 6 inches in the way the Z was done. The grill mounts in front of the cross member to allow clearance for the lower right radiator outlet. I agree that the headlights need to be moved forward but the radiator and grill will remain in place. I don't have the time for a rebuild there and will just enjoy the car. If anyone has early pictures or more knowledge of the car please contact me.

You guys have made this a great thread. Thanks.

I didn't say anything about how I "think it was done". I expressed my opinion (the same one I've had for 62 years) that I didn't think that a '32 shell looked good on a '33/'34..

A '34 with a '32 grill? Might as well stuff a tractor grill on it.

Here's another example of how they built them out here. . .

Hah! Tryna jam out now that I have left the country eh? Not a chance pal, you tossed the gauntlet when I come back, I'm gonna throw down. Dont think I aint lurking just cause I am 3000 miles away!:D
Really, i dont think anyone is going to object to me posting period pics of '34/'34 ford coupes. The topic of the thread IS '33's/'34s with 32 grill shells.

Hey George, PM this guy to put up his car, I think he still owns it...I could not tell if it was an ancient pic, but his profile says he owns a 34 roadster. If this ain't a true old time build, then I give up. It's as good as it gets.

Its tough to nail the stock 34 grill on a channeled 34... believe me, Ive been strugling with mine for years. As far as 32 grills on Model 40's, channeled body is the only way they flow in my opinion..
Here is a popular known 34 that my late buddy use to own.

This car is a carbon copy of my pal Doug's old coupe he built in the 60's and sold it in the 70's,,at the time I didn't like the style but it grew on me because it was a hot rod. HRP

As a 10 year old, I remember buying this issue new, and really liking this car.
It was also on the Life of Riley TV show, which I watched religiously.

I didn't do serious searching but I thought I remembered and NSRA give away car where this was done. turns out it was a roadster, not a coupe, but it's a good looking ride. there fairly detailed build articles on this fittment as I recall
