I know the late 30's gears are better. Are they worth taking good gears out of a B transmission to replace with newer gears? Or not enough difference to justify the work?
If you go over to the "Fordbarn" site, this is covered pretty well by people who have done it and explain some of the pitfalls and benefits to this swap. You are going from straight cut gears to more modern bevel cut gears and lots better synchros.
****tered through this olde thread http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/39-ford-transmission-prices.91515/ are tips on the different generations of trans gears ans what to look for. Yours has straight cut first and reverse, noisier but not weaker. Olde synchro will be a bit slower shifting than late. Nothing really troublesome, if real good, keep it. To update best way is to buy a '40-48 trans and a late.top, 1936-37 or '38-9 p***enger (two types there), some pickups into the '50's. If it doesn't have the late 2-3 fork, that is now reproduced, solving a general problem. Your original shifter is out for any ge****t after '35.
Put a 32 trans with 50's pickup gears in it behind a 2000cc Pinto engine. Worked great. It would wind second as fast as high gear. Stock A rear.
Are the 32 B trans (4 cylinder) and 32 model 18 (V8) transmissions in any way different? BILL RINALDI
The gears, throw out bearing and linkage, shifter, rear mount, drain plugs and inspection plate are the same between the two transmissions. The only thing different is the basic case. The B trans has a large hump to clear the starter and the V8 does not making it easy to tell them apart. Of course all of the mounting locations where the trans attaches to the flywheel housing are different. The picture on the top is a V8 trans (ignore chunk missing from bottom), and the one on the bottom is two Model B transmissions. Charlie Stephens
