I have 40 spindles on my jalopy now, but I picked up a pair of 32 spindles on Saturday. Cheap, Cheap I like the integral steering arm of the 32, but I also like round 40 spindles. What would I be in for as far as king pins go for the 32's? Can I use 37+ style king pins? Pat Ganahl's 32 has a 32 steering arm welded to a 40 spindle, kinda the best of both worlds there. Neal
Neal, you can't use the 37-up style kingpins because the 32 has the thrust bearing on top of the spindle. The "mouth" of the spindle, where the beam fits is narrower. I think there are differences in sealing arrangements for the hubs too. Although some have welded steering arms to spindles (including me) I'd shy away from it now. If I HAD to weld the 32 style arm to a 37 spindle, I'd wouldn't cut the arm straight off, I'd cut a chunk of the kingpin boss away too, and shape it to wrap around the 37 style kingpin boss, so the weld area is much bigger than simply***** welding the arm straight on. This is roughly what we did 25 years ago on the Clockwork orange. Mart.
i dont like them cause the thrust bearing is on top and basically all the weight of the car is on that little piece on top of the king pin, but anyway yes they do look cool i think ...dont quote me... but i think any mech brake king pin with the thrust on top will work the pinch bolt is on a differnt locateion on the later kingpins...
Thanks for the input. I think I will stick with a hoop style steering arm on 40 spindles for my 32 jalopy and save the 32 spindles for my T'n'A project. Neal
Hi Neal . I also like the integrated steering arm , so I ended up using the `32 spindles. The pic was taken after the steering-arms was reshaped . pic was taken some time back . I have since then cut off the king pin " ball-cap " to make them look neater . If you want the Round look , maybe you could weld on some material on the flat sides of the `32 spindles ?
Klaz - That looks******in and is exacly why I bought the 32 spindles. [ QUOTE ] If you want the Round look , maybe you could weld on some material on the flat sides of the `32 spindles ? [/ QUOTE ] I thought of that also. I guess I will think on it for a while. Neal
hey neal ... just another idea ....ive thought of this before but been to lazy to try.. try machining a little off the spindle on the bottom side and putting a little torrington bearing in there i bet that would work******in...
