What's the best method / materials to use for installing the gl*** in a 32 ford windshield frame that doesn't create a nightmare job when the gl*** needs replacing down the road (hard to keep gl*** crack free up here). any suggestions mucho appreciated.
Windshield setting tape. It comes in different thicknesses so you need to know the gl*** thickness and the available space in the windshield frame that you will be working with. Bob Drake sell it in various thicknesses.
I guess it depends on the shop, the guy that replaced the gl*** in my Deuce windshield frame used the gl*** setting tape but he's been in the business as long as I can remember and worked for a gentleman that was replacing gl*** when Model A's were new. HRP
Use gl*** setting tape if you plan on driving the car and will be replacing the windshield on a regular basis. Steer away from urethane if you want to get it apart cleanly.
definitely go with the gl*** setting tape. I removed one that been set in urethane or silicone and it was a nightmare.
thanks folks. Gl*** setting tape it will be. I had to deal with black silicon or urethane getting the gl*** out of a spare frame, ****py job.
Simplest stuff to use is Black cloth electrical tape sometime called friction tape or black hockey stick tape. Take a razor blade and trim it up done deal. if the gl*** gets cracked or chipped in use it will easily come apart for replace. Urethane's a NO No...
You will probably get leaks around the setting tape though. I used a small bead of urethane as a seal on a '32 windshield that was installed with setting tape. Just a thin bead smoothed out with my finger over the top edge of the tape, and cleaned up a little with lacquer thinner. Works fine (no leaks through it), and should be kinda easy to remove later if neccessary.
I have been very fortunate when it came to using the gl*** setting tape and amazed at how well the new Bob Drake rubber sealed the frame to the body. HRP
