What are the best gaskets to use putting a 327 intake on a 283? 383 is a powerpack engine, want to use the holley base intake from the 327.
Fel-Pro and seal the front and rear surface with a 1/4" bead of black silicone sealant. If you're using an older Aluminum intake manifold and the areas around the water p***ages are corroded then clean it good and apply the same silicone. Seal the mounting bolts that screw into the water jacket with #2 Permatex and it should be good to go.
What are you trying to do?? Stay old school as much as you can or do you want more power out of the 283?? Anyway, please consider a pair of 305HO, -601 heads instead of the PP heads. Fwiw, PP heads are down around 147 cc's or so intake port size vs the -601's at 160 cc's. Plus, the PP heads should be around 60 cc's chamber volume vs the -601's at 53 cc's or so And either hunt up an old 327 cast iron AFB intake or an old 2101 intake. As for a cam, no more than the great little old Duntov -097 solid lifter cam and a cheap set of small tube, 4 tube, long tube headers will turn a 283 loose!!! I love these little engines! pdq67
HUH!!! The 340 and 365 hp engines are solid lifter. I think you mean the 350 hp 327 cam which is hydraulic and on the street it will run circles around the solid versions. Frank
Good advice here. I will add that you make sure the intake bolts aren't so long as to contact the pushrods. This is a possible problem with the four center mounting bolts.
just going for the look with the intake. Oil fill tube,AFB.Engine is stock 283 that rund great,2bbl looks wimpy. LO BUC build, vette valve covers cost more than whole engine!!!
Frank, you have it correctly. I was thinking of the Crane cam @ 365 HP. Post #13 http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c1-...-car-vs-a-427-390hp-car-performance-wise.html
Agree on the 305 heads with the old style 350 hp 327 Cam.. I am running a 283 bored .60 over with this combo and it really does make that little 283 perk up ! Good luck, and let us know what you do...
Ugh 305 heads on a 283 Chevy shame shame. Why would anyone want to run a set of cylinder heads with accessory bolt holes on a period correct engine/car. For the amount of miles we put on our cars a set of old Power Packs will last as long as we need them to-and look one hell of a lot better than a set of new ugly heads. As for the solid lifter camshaft why would anyone look at adjusting/lashing valves on your own hot rod as being work-I enjoy pulling the covers and checking the valves on my 327s, 348s, and 409 Chevys. Nothing sounds like a solid camshaft- I'm sorry guys.
Accessory holes can be dealt with and easily filled. My big problem with the 305 heads is the center bolt valve covers. They either need expensive adapters to run perimeter valve covers, or be stuck with the ugly center bolts. And another question; don't those 305 heads use the later style intake manifold?
My 305 heads use the same valve covers as the normal 283's do. Manifold on mine is also the same..(although using an Edebrock) And MR348, As far as comments on not being traditional.....OK..get your points, but you best start criticizing all the disk brakes, PS, 5 speed transmissions, air bags, AC, tachometers, alternators, etc. while you are at it. Just saying....
I wuz gonna jump in and say my 305 heads had perimiter bolts........ but then remembered that they were aftermarket world products. These heads had 58 cc chambers. Used 'em on a flat top 327 with thick head gaskets. Haven't fired it yet, but hoping for the best.
Hmmmm..........327 double hump heads for me, a nice variety on cc's depending on casting fed through the L-79 350 hp hydraulic cam or if not worried about setting the lash as said the Duntov 30/30 cam for the ultimate sound. ..... early 2x 4 Corvette intake some finned valve covers or the 283 steel scripted ones.......Chevy had it right
With the 305 heads you can use regular gas. With the pp heads you have to use the goo stuff. Saves money
305 heads? Not on anything I build. This isn't drag strip stuff where we're trying to eek out every last HP we can find. This is the hamb and it's about doing things the old way. 1957 283, PP heads, Fenton 3x2, delco dual point, Howards Cams hydraulic. It won't do 10's but it's way faster than an A pickup needs to be. <iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/RDfe8PF8nUk?feature=player_detailpage" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Had a .060 over 283 with that head/cam combo through a Saginaw 4 spd and a 3.54 rear---talk about hauling *** for little or nothing. Great combo. Ran that in my 57 BA Chev.
I'm getting old and the hearing isn't so good but from many years with sbc's and bbc's it sounds like the timing is not far enough advanced. Have you got the vacuum advance unhooked? Frank
It's a delco dual point with no vacuum advance. But yes that video was before tuning. But we are kind of hijacking the thread.
