Right, check the press-in studs for loosening as well as pour a small bottle of good old MMO in her to see if the lifter is plugged.

MMO should clean it right out over some miles driving her, imho..

When an exhaust lobe wears flat the exhaust valve no longer opens. therefor the pressure built up in the cylinder has no place to go but back out the intake valve when it opens. This makes a distinct popping sound out the carb. An intake valve not opening will give you a missfire not a popping sound. A bad intake valve will give you a popping sound also.

A worn exhaust lobe will also give you a strange response when doing a cylinder power balance test. This involves watching the idle speed and then pulling one spark plug wire at a time and recording the change in idle RPM. On a good engine this should result in a similar drop in RPM as each spark plug is disconnected. A weak cylinder will show less of a drop in idle speed.

But if an exhaust lobe is worn enough the idle speed will actually increase. The trapped combustion pressure in the cylinder will actually create a drag on the engine since the exhaust valve is not opening. By not firing that cylinder there is temporarily no trapped combustion pressure and the engine will turn more freely with the other working cylinders firing.
