The new issue of Hot Rod [got it yesterday] has all small block specs in the back, check it out, plus early 327's, early 68 -62 have steel cranks, and wind to the heavens. A 350 will make more torque, I'm talking about a conservative build, good luck, hotrodhill.

I like the 327, I beat the snot out of the thing as a daily driver for 5 years, never had an issue at all.

  4. 350 is better than the 327. Always build the biggest engine you can, as its the cheapest way to more power. 350's also have better rods in them than small journal 327's, until you get to the late 80's 350's with rods with thinner beams.

A well built cast crank, stock rod, cast piston 350 will go to 7500rpm all day long, and make more power than the 327 doing it. We do it all the time in circle track racing with stock heads and a stock lift (.390"/.410")cam. We get a season out of a motor before its rebuilt again.

We can legally use the 327, but it doesn't make as much power and is more expensive to build, so why bother when it looks identical to the 350. 327's have a few advantages in bearing speed and rod angularity, but not enought to overcome 23 cubic inches.

  5. the 327 would be older, more nostalgic. but the 350, bigger is always better. except in my girlfriends. I use whatever I can find for cheap. I put a 307 in my '48 Ford truck because it was low mileage and free and some bonehead rebuilt it.

The wife and I were doing some farm stuff this weekend with our '92 dually. A guy lined up with a similar 4x4 chevy truck in a lane that ended. When the light was about to turn I said "hit it" and she did. That 454 is a BFH and 4 rear tires gives good traction! HULK SMASHED!

    Go with a 327. Anyone can say they've got a 350.

And our 327 is .060 so its really almost a 337!

  10. Saying 327 even sounds better than saying 350.

I have two cars, both with nearly identical drivetrains. They both have 700R-4's and 12-bolts and weigh about 3400 lbs. The Malibu has a 327 and the Monte has a 350. They are virtually identical engines, having the same cam, intake, and factory heads.

In a nutshell: the 327 feels faster, but the 350 is faster. My wife has even observed that. The Malibu has gone a 13.9 @ 98 mph, and the Monte has gone 13.5 @ 102 at the same track. The 350 is definitely stronger, but the 327 feels snappier.

    HTH, have fun deciding...

totally agree with dagnesta. Similarly set up, 327 feels faster, but the 350 is. 327 is cooler. But you could be my hero and run a chevy 302.... cooler still.

Depends on what it is going in. If it's a heavier car or truck you will enjoy the more toque of the 350 and an automatic transmission. However in a light car there is nothing like a good 327 with a four speed.

Interesting thread here. I have a 350 with dual quads in my A and a built 327 on a stand that eventually will go in the A. The 350 is stock and was bought mainly for mock up but the 327 has been calling my name for a while. I remember some pretty hot little 327's back in the 60s and that's the era I'm shooting for on my build cuz that's the period I came up in. Either will scoot the A down the road pretty quick but I want to make the drags here in Texas next year to see what it will do. Have a lot of work to do but, what else is new. Anybody else?

  18. I have a 327 in my 50 Merc that came out of my 63 Impala 327/300 hp Stock with
the Powerglide Trans & it Runs Great
and if you can't tell the Difference from the 2 you should be walking
Just by looking at the Front of the Engine you can tell if its a 283, 327 or 350
    Just my 3.8 cents

Big bearing 327 block, GM stroker crank and pistons (.030 over)...should give around 355 Cid and be WAY cooler than any belly button 350!;):D

It's not what you got...its how you promote it.
