Ok Guys and Gals, could you help settle a “discussion” between my Dad and I? After fixing oil burning diesels all day, I was listening to some great traditional Rock and Roll. Shut Down came on, and it got me to thinking (insert joke here) and wondering which car would have won the race? Stingray or Dodge? Dad says the Stingray would have spanked the Dodge, I always like cubic inches, so I chose the Dodge. What do you guys think? Oh, Dad is kinda biased, he had a 340 horsepower 327 in his 63 Spilt Window. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I am a Chevy Guy, but the 1962 Melrose Missile 413 Max Wedge ran a 11.93 in Super Stock Don't think a 365 hp Stingray could touch that. If Stingray had slicks, and the MOPAR didn't ?
The song lyrics mention super stock dart with a 413. The little fuel injected 327 wouldn't stand a snowballs chance in hell!
Too many unknown factors. skill of the driver makes a whole lot of difference. I seen a 44o roadrunner beat a 350 vette in 1969. both where 4 speeds and both new. Two weeks later the vette had better rear tires and beat the Roadrunner. They only way to have a fair assment would to weigh them and figure cubic inch to body weight. add weight to whichever needed it. and have the both run the same rear gear and tires.
Disclaimer: No, I was not around quite yet but a couple of years later Jenkins' 350 hp 327 Nova was giving the Hemi cars fits in A/stock with mid eleven second runs, I doubt the 413 cars would even show up by then. Exhibit A https://www.cartechbooks.com/featuredcar/grumpystoys/
the 365 Hp 327 vette would win over the 413...the song mentions being fuel injected back in to early 70's i saw `57 chevy with a 283 beat a Dodge Charger with a 426 hemi in a 1/4 mile street race to be fair, the Charger could not get any traction. the `57 Chevy had 5:83 gears in a posi rear end , slicks , a 4-speed transmission, a wild cam, headers and 2-4's. the guy driving the `57 later told me he was turning 9500 RPM's when he crossed the line so there are a lot of variables i do see both guys around every once and a while
I had a '70 Roadrunner. 383, dual Carters, 4spd, 4:56 diff. She'd scream. Torque AND rpms. Probably the fastest and most powerful car I've ever owned or driven. A 413 has the stroke of a 383 but a bigger bore. I'd bet $ on the Mopar.
Yup, Grumpy was wooping everyone in his class. Sent from my Chromebook 11 Model 3180 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
If the Dodge was a Mr. Norm's Grand Spaulding 413 in a Dodge Dart well.........do I hafta even say it?! 6sally6 WAIT!!!!...I remember something about a little Cobra ...shut'in 'em down!
I dunno......I had a 350 HP 327, 4.10 posi in my '64 'vette and one night a buddy with a 70 duster, 340/4 speed almost got me. His mopar had open headers and my car was capped up with no tach so I just shifted when I heard him shift. Got him by a fender. Never raced a big block mopar but I did beat a 65 GTO with a big block chevy in it. Again, not by much. Oh yeah, no curves involved. I did go for a ride with a guy in Portland who was driving a 63 dart [the little one] he'd installed a 413 in. Had no hood because the engine had the long tube sonic ram intake with a torquflite...scared the holy shit outta me! That thing was an animal!!!
Ddd denny go check your facts on your claim. Jere Stahl owned Jenkins ass with his 66 hemi. Jere beat Jenkins for the championship. The nova was no match for the top end charge of the hemi. To end the debate on who was the faster car a quick look at the records book tells the tail. The max wedge rewrote the record book from 62-64. As a disclaimer I own a 66 chevelle with a 327 and have owned max wedge cars. Not all 413s were the same. A max wedge was special and could easily take the vette.
Chevrolet pulled out of racing end of 63 so Grumpy was tuning and racing MOPAR 64-65 Redeemed himself in his 1966 Nova with a 327
The song was released in 1963. The Sting Ray had slicks (that were startin to spin). Superstock Dodges got max wedge 426s in '63, so I'm guessing the car in the song was a '62. https://www.hotrod.com/articles/mopp-0203-1962-dodge-dart/
must be a couple (at least) of guys here that would love to set up this race at a Nostalgia Drags event - I had a '65 Nova with a blue printed 365 hp 327 and had a friend with a 63 1/2 Ford with a 427 - neither set up for track drags - both automatics - not a measured 1/4 mile - Nova a bat out of hell at the start but, 427 caught up with it - nobody bragged about anything except for the thrill of the race
Brian I JUST KNEW if there was a thread to have some fun with this would be it. Those had to have been some great times for the Chrysler versus Chevy fans. Yeh, I know, Bill had his hands full, like many say, many things to consider, he may not have done as well as he did had he not been so good on the four speed. I'm aware of the capabilities of those Hemi cars as I helped a friend with his 66 Belvedere II about 1970/71, never ran more than regional S/S but I'll concede those things were pure scary on the tires of the day, I can't imagine what they must have felt like with the earlier tire compounds. Please note I said Jenkins' 327 gave the hemi cars fits, he didn't always win but he made ol Jere earn those wins.
What if we look at the facts and figures. The Corvette is simple to calculate, a 1963 Stingray had a curb weight of 2859lbs and a 360HP fuel injection 327 engine for a power/weight ratio of 7.94 lbs per HP. A 1962 Dodge came in various models but a V8 330 is given as 3135lbs. The 413 engine was offered in various states of tune, the lowest being 365HP, slightly more than the Corvette. But the dual 4 barrel Max Wedge had 410HP. There was an even more powerful 13:1 compression 420HP job but let's say it was the milder motor. 3135lbs and 410HP = 7.64 lbs per HP. So, pretty evenly matched with a very slight edge to the Dodge. So it looks like pick 'em. But on the drag strip the Super Stock Dodge was the car to beat while the Corvette was seldom seen. Everything being equal I think my money would be on the Dodge but, it would be a close race.
Having street raced against a number of Mopars big blocks back in the day it might come down to if the Mopar had an automatic or 4 speed as the automatic Mopars were constantly quicker than 4 speed Mopars. It also came down to who ever tuned either one of them. Bob Norwood used to turn out some fast Mopar big blocks before he moved to Texas and became a Ferrari tuner.
