I forgot about Pepe, I have a book published in 1970, called Complete Book of Chevrolet. I think it was put out by Peterson Publishing. There is a chapter about Pepe setting up rear differentials called “Bring up the Rear”. Dad gave me this book when I was around 12 and I’ve read it so many times that I’m surprised that I didn’t wear the ink off of the pages. This book began my worship of the Mighty Chevrolet. In the spirit of being fair and complete I found two other tests of the 413 in 1962. Car Life 1962 Dart 413/385- 3 spd std 4.10 gear--15.10 @ 92 Car Life 1962 Dart 413/410- 3 spd std 4.56 gear--13.75 @106
Still trying to figure out where Grumpy found a 400 block to destroke in '66.. Since this happened on the strip where the road is wide, I going with the Vette. Simply because it takes some real restraint & finesse to launch one those mighty Mopar beasts on the street.
The great equalizer in the early 60s https://www.cokertire.com/820-15-firestone-blackwall.html This was about as much tire as you could find. Mopar was the only company offering high performance automatics that didn't shock the tires as bad as the stick shift cars. easyer to control traction. Bolt on a set of 8.20/15 bias ply tires and see how fast your car is.
If the Rambler was a 57 Rebel it could have been true From road tests a 57 rebel was 2nd only to a 57 fuelie corvette 0 to 60 by .0l of a second.
Yah it's just a song but it's something fun to discuss in January. Here in Wisconsin the wind is blowing hard and the snow is falling. This thread makes me think of the upcoming warm weather and getting the cars back out.
Was told the 1st picture was taken in 1964, the day the car came home from the dealership in Manitowoc. It was used as a drag/strip car and it became known as Blue Blood, around 68-69 the wedge was replaced with a 426 Hemi The group of Manitowoc Guys that called themselves The Speed Specialists, picture taken around 1966.
'At the count of one we both accelerate' What the hell is up with that? "Now when I count one.." Wait, wait! Shit, I thought the pro tree was tough.
It was a blue car sold here in Pocahontas at Powel Sims Motor Co. It was in the spring of 69 and it might still have been a new car even if it was a 68 model. I never looked under the hood it could have been a hemi for all I know. My point is there are too many factors to say for certain in any hypothetical race. Skill of the driver has a whole lot to do with it.
Different tune. Dead Mans Curve. Sting Ray vs XKE. The other happens at the track. It does mention the SuperStock Dodge winding out in low. Thus auto trans?
Surprised no one has thrown the “little deuce coupe” in yet. If she had a set of wings I know she could fly!
The Corvette chassis was very good for drag racing, and then all those u-joints to break. A road course was a different story. Sent from my Chromebook 11 Model 3180 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app

That was Fast and Furious time. You know when a 10 second car ment it would spend 10 seconds in each gear.
All righty! Here's my true historical footnote to the story/song/saga of a joust between a 327 and a 413...... Back in '65, my buddy had a new Impala, 327, 3 on the tree with limited slip, and whatever basic 4-barrel those came with. So he has a 1/4 mile race with another kid from town in a full-size Dodge, 413, that's a couple years old, automatic but I don't know the other equipment details. It was a nice looking hardtop so let's assume it was equipped like the Chevy. Neither one of these pudknockers knew how to put in an advance kit or change a jet so both are just like the factory did 'em. Long story, short, the Chevy wins by a car length. That's a close race and a pretty even match. With similar transmissions, the Dodge ought to have the advantage of more torque which equates to more acceleration.
When the magasine Mopar action tested this song at the strip the Corvette where loosing. Its problaby 15 years ago i read this article so i dont remember the details.
And did you expect anything different when a biased reporter is in control of the test?? Even if we switch the two names in the above statement, my comment still stands. I don't trust any road/track test conducted by parties that stand to gain something depending on the outcome.
Me thinking both in stock form........the vette guy would take some cash and beer home. Now the 413 max wedge would maybe be closer, but I think that little high winding 327 with a fourspeed ,in the quarter mind you would be a little stinker. I remember just the old 327 - 340 horse vettes were pretty jazzy. Now 20 feet past the quarter could be a different story. Your results may vary.
Well too many variables there. Which 413 for example, which dodge body, which Stingray and which 327? Stock or built? The basic 413 was cool (I like 'em real well) but they were not a hot rod. There were some fast factory 413s. But if we are talking numbers here way more fast factory 327s then there were 413s. Narrow the field for us and let us guess.
