Well when I start reconstructive surgery please chime in! There is definitely no extra windows back there, but I’ll let the pros figure that out! Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
As I quoted Achemy, I’ll let you decide when it is together as there aren’t those mini window thingy’s back there? Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
As in lengthening the doors or shortening the body... or lengthening the body? someone earlier said the doors were the same on 33/34? Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
basically, yes, 33, 34 doors are " similar" . the length of the 3w is the same as a tudor, but the shape does not match the body. much more curve , or bulge out in the 3w, and the same at the top where it meets the roof. some folks have done it, not me, perhaps they will chime in
3w and tudor sedans are about 38 3/4" measured at the bead line. Tudor doors have been used on a 3w but the door top at the back of the door are shaped differently. 35-37 ford pickup door tops have been used or using another pair of door tops from a 33-34, both using the front sections and putting them on the opposite door at the back, I've included a picture to illustrate.
I’m going to get the doors in order then build the body around the side profile of the doors... Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
Mark Codd an excellent metal man and expert on chopping 33-34 coupes stated "Problems with using sedan doors on a 3 window. Bottom hinge is 7/8” to high, belt line radius is flatter, door tops are 3/8” narrower, back of inner door skin is 1/4” lower and just found out that the back of the door window is a 1/4” lower. This is why cars that are made out of sedans the roof looks flat."
Will need to adjust the attachment point on the body then for the bottom hinge. I will be removing the middle hinge. When re-skinning the cut will be across that belt line so I can work the profile at that time. I will need to see what the door tops look like/see if they pass the eye test. As fit the last 2 measurements I don’t know if the chop will take care of them. I guess I will just need to jump in and find out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
And, more food for thought, due to the "smoker's window" the window riser mechanism is different between 33 and 34, and the bolt locations in the inner panel are different also. my 34 3w has a door pieced together from 2 different doors and the inner panel is 33. i had to change the mount holes, and the door was really poorly done so the smokers window feature barely works without manually moving the window with your hands every time you move it. In order to fix it, i figure i will have to cout off the new door skin, and rebuild all the tracks and riser locations to get a functioning window while the whole side is open to work on it. Makes me angry every time i think about it!
most folks eliminate the top hing when chopping tops, but real men keep all 3. its part of the charm of a model 40
More food for thought, in the six years i have been playing with my 34 3w, my only experience, not trying to come off as the expert on the subject, i have only seen two 3w doors come up for sale. both were 3k, and both sold in about a day. A set of garnish moldings will bring 2500, and sell quick. Next, the original car had wood B pillars. you most likely dont have any worth copying. Many folks use the steel B pillars from a 4 door. you most likely will make them once you have a door to match. Next, the order of assembly. If using original parts, you get the frame all straight and ready, and the original floor is then set on. all the bolt holes line up, its all level, and you then set you body on and line up to the original holes in the floor pan. In your case, things will be built by you, but i believe you will need to follow this basic order to get door gaps and make it all work out. Good challenge for you Doc, keep us posted !
I'm planning on making a 3W out of a tudor cowl and doors and B pillars I'll be using new Steve's Restoration roadster quarters. I'll have to make a top out of a Tudor and I plan to chop it 5-6 "so every thing should work out
Will be leaning on you heavy for this then I see! I just cannot justify spending that kind of scratch on patch panels etc... I have a local steel mill and tools to make the panels. I’m going to use the extra cash for stuff I’m not interested in doing, or cannot physically make like a SCot Blower Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Dont lean on me, you might fall over! Again, only one for me and many folks here have done dozens. Keep posting and you get lots of help here at the hamb. happy motoring
one looks like a blower off a Detroit diesel, and one looks like the original old skool hot rod blower
I love this one... Here are the heads and another option... Thoughts? Any other blower options? I assume the Arden heads are very "kool" then... I also love the title of the rag saying "save your money" with $15,000 heads by them...
Sorry, you will have to get opinions from some one else on "luxury "items like that. I believe H&H has a good rep though, search it here. Here's my jalopy, not perfect, not done, not fast...but i get a big grin every time i look at it. Fired it up just today for the first time since October. Too muddy here on the frozen plains for a drive, but a balmy 45 degrees so i had to hear the flathead run
With regards to the 3w-5w confusion, I need to admit too many years have come to pass to recall all the details, however the buzz around the years ago Lincoln Ne. fairgrounds swap meet that someone had just hauled in a 32 3w project created a stampede akin to a cattle roundup.. myself included...but alas it turned out to be a 5w with blanked out quarter windows. seems it was in the $5-$6k range not certain who carted that one off no doubt had some hot-rod roots that would be right in step with the the H.A.M.B. folks.
Any one who has a 3 window or five is a lucky guy or gal in my book. To have either in my garage would be a dream come true. For now I'll keep at my T roadster, and keep watching these post of those lucky few. Mike
I came by mine in '95 knowing I had a treasure after wanting one since the middle ages. I'm gettin to old now to keep it up anymore so the thoughts of selling are starting to rattle around in my empty brain chamber. Just thoughts now, but............................................................................
I was a senior in college then and used to dream of cars and bikes... Not a dollar to my name, in deep debt. Still paying off my medical school loans, but oh how the tables have turned. My dreams are now a reality. I've been a physician for 21 years now and my passion for patient care and automobilia has never wavered. The 15 year schooling was apparently worth it. I'm currently closing in on my blocks, so more to follow!
This was meant for the T but will go on the 33’ Should polish up nicely... Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
