56 inches wide should be just about right. I have a 55.5 in wide 9 inch under the 32 sedan we have been building. Thats wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface. I always figure out what wheels and tire size i want to run first and then i can figure a final axle width. You way be able to go a little narrower if you wanted to use a deep dish wheel but i would check clearence in the inner wheel well.

    I run a 57 Ford 9" - 57.25 - using 8" rims with a 3 1/2" backspace and a 225 x75 tire. Most shops sell the 56" as standard and they fit about all early Fords.

90% of the 28/34 ch***is done in my shop use the 56 outside width rear with big bearings and late Torino ends, Currie/Johns/and Winters. That is a 51 inch end to end housing with the axles having a 2.50 bearing offset for either drums or discs.

DSC02123.JPG I'm running a 255 in my 32 sedan. It fills the rear fender up nicely. I would think the same would work on a 33-34

You can run the housing centered or pinion centered. I use housing centered rears as about half of what I do is triangulated 4 bar and they mount a little easier on a housing centered rear. I've done lots of ladder bar rear ends with pinion centered rears.

Your doing a full fendered car so it really doesnt matter if you center the housing. your not going to see it.

Get the wheels and tires you want. Set them under your car. Adjust to the fit you want.
Measure distance of mounting surface. now you have the width of the rear end

On my 34 tudor I have 55" wms to wms with 235x70x16, (a little smaller width, same hight than 255x70x15) 8" wheels-4" back space and had to do a mild tub job to make them fit. Bought tires and wheels first, ordered a rear and made them fit. The 8" Maverick rear (56" i think) would have worked with different offset wheels. ^^^^^ like he said, John
