OK, I've done a lot of reading on here and cannot seem to make this info mean anythig (If there's a better place for this thread, let me know.) I'm certain that what I have is a 331 Industrial Engine. It has the "W" cast into the block. It's been bored 0.030 over. Note that it doesnt have a S/N on the top front of the block (??) I read somewhere that the 5/16" dowel pins were only used on earlier HEMIs What more can anyone tell me ablout it? Is there a "standard" 4-bbl carb that fits this? I can get some more measurements if need be. Thanks Gatz
I too would like to know more about the 331 and like you said I'm sure someone will send us there. I'll let them yell at you first. LOL
The casting number shows it's a 331 from a 55-56 Dodge Truck. Not sure why the head dowels are only 5/16. It's possible the block is what some people call a 354 that was only board out to a 331. It's my understanding that only the 354's and 392's had the 5/16" dowel pins. I hope that helps.
1619829 is a 354, or is that 629 Here it seems to be bored to 331 & no use code in front of the valley cover it is probably an underbored 354 used as a warranty replacement for a 331. You could bore .030 & have nice thick walls, or 354 std or somewhat bigger w/o maxing out the bore, but a sonic check might be a good idea before going wild with the overbore.
you might also check for a stamped number as in the picture. If you are certain it is a 331 Ind, I'm not sure what you are asking?
