Can I run my 1954 331 on 12 volts instead of 6 volts WITHOUT ANY DAMAGE when I covert my 1955 Dodge C.R.L. over to 12v from 6v?
I bought a 54 Imparial w a 12v battery in it, & generator still in. Never drove it but would let it run. Didn't seem to cause problems.
The starter will be fine....you should change the coil....and don't forget to reverse the polarity on the coil assuming you are going to run 12V neg. grd.
Your generator will put out pleanty of power with a 12V regulator as well. In testing, my stock 6V '55 Ply generator put out 17 volts and 70 amps
please check!!!!! add voltage reducers to gauges and any 6v controlled switches, clock. fan and switch ,radio and whatever else think!!!!!!! change over all 6v bulbs to 12v ign coils points and cond?????? It uses spark and gas to run its the charging system and the accessories that need your thinking about them when switching.. burned out systems at night is never fun .. some will run for a while and just go out when you are not ready......... use a 12volt charger hooked to the item direct to see if it will work most 6volt systems have heavier wiring that seems to lower the 12v power so check first!!! a proper 6v system is fine except when its goin bad ... jumpstarts and stereos ?????? good luck paperdog
Switches don't need to be changed.....they don't care if they have 6 or 12 volts running thru them. The heavier wiring of a 6V system, when in good condition, works better than what is found in most 12V systems. It will not lower your power....it has LESS resistance...
Don't forget the resistor going to the points to reduce voltage to 6 volts. I've got one off a 56 Chevy on my 46 Ford.
Why would you need that? As far as I know, points are points and dont care what voltage is going through them. Or are you talking about the balast resistor for the coil? Just curious.
