Good morning, I'm considering a swap for my 52 New Yorker. It had an extended bell hemi that decided it had enough. I have a replacement block for it but with the extended bell the transmission choices are limited to begin with plus as we know hemis can be spendy. Ive started toying with the idea of putting a mild 360 in it. Seeing as the car is built with a V8 how well with the small block drop in? Has anyone done this? Thanks!
Speed Gems makes a number of adaptors to take a 331 to either a 727 / A518 Auto pattern or to a SB Chrysler manual pattern. Not cheap, but then old cars never are. Hot Heads is another source. I used a Hot Heads adaptor to put an A518 behind a 325 Dodge Red Ram hemi a number of years ago for service in a '32 Plymouth. https://transmissionadapters.com/collections/early-hemi-1
I have not done this group of parts into this car, so can't help with experience. As per any swap, figure out cooling, exhaust, mounts, wiring, and controls. This has a tailshaft mounted parking brake to consider. This is probably the best place for answers, but also check P15-D24 and the imperial club. Also, 1952 brakes with later model power are something to research, along with the 6V positive ground.
Small Mopar V8 into a large Mopar V8? I don't see a problem if you have the transmission to go with the new engine. If you were planning on keeping the original transmission (M5 or Powerflite?), well, that's a bad idea. As mentioned, you will still have problem with the emergency brake (you will probably need a new rear end), and the car being 6 volts is best solved by a 12 volt conversion. Other than that it's probably just a matter of fabricating mounts and exhaust. If you have (and want to keep) power steering, well, that can be another problem. I'm sure it's been done. Hopefully someone who has will pop in here.
Using an LA with TF has been done hundreds, if not thousands of times in the 40's and 50's cars. You have plenty of room for the engine, but you will likely need the 70's A-body driver side exhaust manifold to clear the steering shaft. Yes, you will need to change everything to 12 volt. Yes, you will need a new rear axle since you are losing the e-brake. Everything else is standard hot rod engineering. Start a build thread if you proceed with the swap and you'll find plenty of hand-holding.
I put a modern Hemi in my '52 DeSoto. It's like any engine swap, you can swap anything into anything if you're determined enough. You're gonna have to work around some stuff, like the goofy bell-crank/idler/pitman arm steering, And exhaust manifold around the steering box is going to be a chore. The parking brake in your car is on the transmission, so you'll need to swap rear ends if you want a parking break. Should be pretty easy otherwise.
Brian makes a good point, there are plenty of 5.7's to be had. Problem is, at least on this forum, you will not get any support because as soon as you mention GenIII Hemi your thread/post will get scrubbed. There is support for 'those' projects over at www.p15-d24com and also at the Moparts Forums - Forums powered by UBB.threads The 5.7 is a powerhouse and full of electronic gizmos but what a ride...
What do you mean by "it had enough"? I would just rebuild it. Modern generic V8's are just that. Nothing beats a Hemi.
