I commented on someone's thread yesterday and recieved a pm asking for pix of my car this morning. Here they are, the first one is freshly rolled out of the trailer and they go in succession to the prgress I have made so far. I have the stock frame and running gear if anyone needs them. I am building a new ch***is and will run a 426 wedge engine.
The last picture shows the lower portion of the door in, also I fixed the heart shape of the side window created from using the front of the rear door and the rear of the opera window. I sliced the top of that window horizintally and m***aged the steel to the proper contour then glued it back together. This picture does not do the window justice, it looks good now. The p***enger side is also done except for the lower edges of both quarter panels need to be filled and then welded. I cut the triple panel edge of the door off, so I need to fold a piece of steel over and use it to fill the gap that the body has right now. I have been using a stripping disc and a chemical called evapo rust on the body. The jury is still out, I will let you know how this stuff works after it has been on the body for some time in humid florida.
It was me. Thanks for the response. Looking good, keep us posted. Are you going to run fenders?[/INDENT]
Nice job so far. It would totaly rock if you built the 426 like a stage III max wedge. keep up the good work.
I know it was you Richard. Yes I am going to run it fenderless, channeled, no chop, air bag over straight axle (thanks hammer_dollie) I hope to use the wheels that are on the front end in the first pic. Mopar 8 3/4 with a triangulated 4 bar and bags, 727 (unless I find a deal on a stick trasmission) I am going to use aluminum heads on the 426, but I will paint them and the valve covers that same as the rest of the engine (426 stickers on em). I have a torker manifold for a RB and will use a demon carb. I have not decided for sure about headers, I am leaning toward fenderwell. I hope I can get enough radiator in the 34 grill shell to cool the beast.
Ha, I was just gonna ask if those were for sale. If they're 16" then they're '36 Plymouth wheels, if they're 17" they're earlier and I have an extra one availible.
Grinder, I am in between Tampa and Orlando. I bought this car from my brother, he bought it from a dealer in Canada. So technically I did find it in florida, but it had only been in this climate (under cover) for a few years. he wanted to run it fully fendered and Al Capone'd out. I see things a bit differently.
This is almost exactly how i plan to do mine, with the exception that i'm going to stretch the front door a little. Although, yours looks very proportional as is. I wonder if thats a difference between the 34' and the 29' though. Very nice work.
Just an idea - push the C pillar forwards to take some length out of the side window. It´s a much easier alternative to strecthing the doors! And chopped a little. Nice looking project. This could turn out really well.
Looks cool. If you stretched the doors then it would just look like another 2 door sedan. The 2 door sedan doors were 5" longer. I think it would look better with a 2" chop even channeled. The coupes roofs were 2" lower. Being fenderless it might also look cool with a bussel trunk.
There were never any two door sedan '34 Chryslers. It will be channeled 4 inches (it will appear to be channeled 6 inches). I am 6'4" so I won't be chopping the top and I really like the way the body looks now. That's a no on the bussel trunk also!
those fenders look pretty good on it in the first picture. lower it a few inches and a mild chop, you would have one bad *** "gangster style" car.
Well if you want to get picky they didn't make a 34 non airflow coupe either! Also whats going to identify it as a chrysler? The dash? Grill shell? The hood?
Any plans to shorten up the rear wheelhousings? They look rather long for a car that will not be running fenders.........
33mopwer, no disrespect meant. Sometimes typing can come across in ways it was not meant to. The grill shell emblem, the gauges, the hubcaps all say Chrysler. All are from this car. I am not sure about the hood yet, I may or may not use it. Shifty, I have not worked on the car in the last year, I got sidetracked building a '48 panhead. I need to build a shop to finish this car in, thats what I am trying to work out now. Hemi, I wont alter the wheel openings, I know they are huge, but I might run the fenders at some point down the road. AJ, I have a set of '31 ford headlights I will use unless I can trade them for a nice set of guides, so it wont be totally Mopar... the front axle is also a copy of a Ford I beam, but yea the running gear will all be Ma's. I have the headlights original to this car, but one of the buckets is pretty bad off.
here is a few pics of mine, it is a 1933 dodge. l am planning on the shorting this one, how many inches did you remove and what did you use to fill in the top? l need a grille because mine was missing, the price was a real good deal so, guess l really can't complain. the one wih the white walls was photo shopped to resemble how l would like it to look when cut down. the doors in this pic iare like what hip and 33mopower suggested. the black one l found on the web, it is close to what mine might look like when cut down, not sure about that quarter window. youre's is looking gooooooood, later,
Today I got the doors off their hinges and did some welding on the p***enger side behind the door. I am getting the body ready to take it to the dipper. They are going to derust the body (it is a non acid bath), I hope to run the exterior of the car in bare metal for a while anyway. I will use Gibbs oil to keep the rust off the exterior. I also have been making a new cowl vent handle, the original was broken. I welded the OG one, but I think I will use the one I made... its stronger. <!-- / message --><!-- controls -->
I am planning to cut 10 inches off the tail end of the body. That makes the wheel opening appear smaller and makes the tail level or a bit higher than the rocker panel. Here is what I am talking about doing...this is a rough photochop just to get an idea of what it would look like. I will leave the gas filler hole in the body, but cut the two lower spare tire mount holes out. I have to redo the body line at the end of the tail anyway, so I feel like this is a good time to modify the tail.
Ok, here is what I did today. First I leveled the body .... I found the center of the rear window and used that as the center of the car. I made a string tied on a pencil the length of the measured distance and drew the radius on both sides. I laid tape lines to mark the straight part of the cut. I laid three lines down as I wanted to see where the line would look the best. I cut below the third line and on the pencil marked radius. Here is a picture right after I cut the tail off. I ended up only cutting about 5 inches of length off the body, but that was enough to shorten the wheel opening and make the tail even with the rocker panels. The car is in the back of my truck and will be delivered to Auto Restoration Depot in the morning. Three weeks from now I will have a completely rust free body to work on!! I will decide on the body lines for the tail when I get it back.
I picked the body up from 'Restoration Depot' today, here are a few pictures of what they did to the car. There is a bit of surface rust still in the cowl vent, but everywhere else they did a great job of removing the nastiness that has ac***ulated over the years. http://www.autorestorationdepot.com/ArticleContinued.html
