Hot Rods 34 coupe..Dismembered to drag coupe.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Kiwi Kev, Mar 12, 2024.

  1. I began adding some structure into the frame where I had cut some of the 1 inch tubing
out for ladder bar clearance. I added a couple of drive shaft loops, now I know what shape to make the floor. There is a lot of work to do to the frame when the body comes off later. Boxing, gussets, finish welding etc. IMG_1669.jpeg IMG_1678.jpeg IMG_1681.jpeg IMG_1684.jpeg

Great work, nice little list of parts going in this. What material did you use for the ladder bars?

  3. Ladder bar material is 1” OD x .250 wall seamless tubing. Heavier wall than needed, I was gifted a few lengths of it.

  5. IMG_1834.jpeg IMG_1838.jpeg IMG_1848.jpeg I have been spending many hours putting patch panels, new rockers etc in the lower body, pic’s to come. I also figured out how I want to mount the gauges. There is not going to be a dash board, just flat aluminum recessed firewall. Like I said earlier in this thread, nothing over engineered on this car. A piece of 2” aluminum angle will work just right. Eventually I will make a nicer version with the top shaped to match the cowl. Also I think I found a home for my Mooneyham Blowers pin. I am not sure if I will run this tach, I have a Jones cable drive I would like to run but not sure if I will be able to use it or not.

  6. I would love to find a black face Eelco temperature guage if anybody has a lead on one. Also another black black face Eelco in that isn’t temp, oil pressure or amps to fill the other hole.

  9. These pics show the condition of the lower quarter panels, rockers and cowl sides. New metal needed everywhere. IMG_1855.jpeg IMG_1856.jpeg IMG_1694.jpeg IMG_2041.jpeg
Upper driver side cowl had an old repair where someone had brazed up some holes and left a warped mess so I cut that out and welded in some new metal. IMG_1696.jpeg
New rockers needed to be modified to clear the frame I am using, 35/36 highly modified swap meet special. Doors clear fine. Kind of funky but on this car funky is good.

After many hours some satisfying progress….

  10. There is a lot more patching to do. It needs a new panel below the trunk, top chop needs finishing, doors need fitting and one needs a lower panel, new latches etc, etc. To keep myself motivated I sprayed on a few cans of primer to give it a different look. Kevin I knew you were building this car I had no idea you had a thread till the other day I’ve now gotten caught up on the build and you and I have the very same style and taste this winter I plan on at least mocking my ****py 34 together and yes mine is worse than yours but poor guys have poor ways lol it’s taken me 20 years to gather up enough stuff to get mine to at least roller stage so I understand your struggle the hyder mccloud car is my inspiration on my build though I love the 15 oz coupe and 554 car the hyder car was more of a working mans car compared to the others as there wasn’t fancy mag wheels on it or lots of sponsors to it and I think that is what makes it so perfect to me I do have a set of mag rear 5spokes I could put on it I probly won’t I’ll just use the good ol steel wheels of course they will cost me more in the long run mainly cause I have to buy them lol when I do get started on it I’ll try to start a thread so you can tell me what I’m doin wrong lol keep up the good work

That is great Jackson, wish I could do the same. Look forward to your build. Kevs build on this monster is by far my favorite on the HAMB. Just keeps getting better.:)

yes Kevin’s car is definitely top notch my **** box is another story I do have a blown Hemi to put in it but I also have a 394 olds and just not sure which one to use yet guess I’ll just mock it up with both and decide from there lol mine will be more of a strip car than a street car but who knows that can change anytime lol what’s better than driving a fuel coupe down the street
