I to like them both, in my opinion the 5/W lends itself to being a high boy better than the 3/W, the 3/W looks great with fender etc. With the "goods"" you have laying around you could make turd look sexy............................

As I said already, It's not about going fast. If it were,I wouldn't waste my time with a SBC anyhow! Especially when I have a 426 Hemi sitting here in the shop..I happen to LIKE flatties and early non-SBC/BBC engines even if they are under-powered,problematic,oil leaking, more expensive, etc. etc. etc..
My reasoning for doing a frame swap is because even though I don't like the current driveline, there are alot of guys that would probably be all over this chassis as-is..There's alot of time and some $$ building this chassis and I think rather than changing it all around to my liking,It would be better to pass it along and start over. Rather than cutting off the SBC engine mounts, replace the flattie mounts, fixing the X member and other repairs,I'd rather get a stock frame and bolt my flattie in and be done with it! A lot less work in my opinion..Also,There's a good possibility I could sell this chassis and buy a stocker and still have cash left over in my pocket!

If I had all of those goodies, I would be installing the blown Ardun. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

If you switch chassis be sure the serial number on the discarded chassis isn't readable anymore. That way the next owner won't try to title their new car with your numbers.

Hey guys, I cleaned this thread up a bit... Please keep your opinions to yourself if you can't express them without bagging on someone else's.

    Thanks!

Bright red, 3.5" chop, fendered, lowered all around but a nice nose down rake, whitewalls, '56 Lancer spinners. Keep the 283 and who gives a shit about the T5 and disk brakes if you never see em. ;)

Leave the hood sides down and run it man. I'm all for a good strong flattie. But drive the sbc till it pops. Then youll know what to do

  14. Wow. 5 pages of opinions of how you should build your car. None of us will ever see it in person, never-mind get a chance to get behind the wheel.
Build it the way you want it and in a way you'll be happy with it.

Would love a set of fenders, just to have your option. I've reco'd a pair of 56 drums to replace the P&J disc's in front.
Next spend will be muncie and 3rd pedal. IMG_0116.JPG

Very cool car. Drive it till you decide to change the engine. Put some more brush strokes in the body and fenders.
keep the tires spinning and the girls grinning!! Adam b

A pile of parts is hard to drive. Enjoy it as is. I find planning changes is a process worth dragging out. Especially when you have a driver.

  22. A flatty doesn't need to be anything you mentioned with the exception of the dollar to HP ratio and I never try and get in the way of anyone's spending. Your cash your decision.

I probably come from an entirely different world than you so take what I have to say with a grain of salt. We always believed that to call a car a hotrod you improved the performance in some way. That didn't mean tat you had to take someone else's rod and make it faster, although that was normally someone's goal and with my old heaps it was usually pretty easy. it did not become a hot rod just because it changed owners. So your desire to go flathead with a car that was already built just seems backward to my mind set.

I am old and set in my ways so any apology I would make for my sarcasm would be in-genuine. I have too much respect for you to say something that is hypocritical.

I will give you this, your desire to run a flatty doesn't loose you anything in the respect dept. from me. It actually shows a lot of restraint, and is leaps and bounds a head of a lot of other things you could do with the old car. I have nothing against the flathead Ford, I have had a desire to build a light car (or motorcycle) with a V-8 60 for some time. It would be an exercise in futility but it is what it is I suppose.

You have been given good advise on the frame numbers by the way, unless you find a frame with good numbers and a title and let your title leave with your current chassis. Depending on the state DOT requirements for title you could end up in a bad place with a switched frame and someone else trying to use your numbers.

I am following you so I will be able to watch what ever you decide to do with the old heap (unless you decide to go all facebook on me and block my ass). Good luck on the build, let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Thanks for the reply,PNB..Your opinions are well based and have a ton merit.True,.It is the point of hot rodding, to make a car perform better in some fashion and I cannot make a valid argument against it. Removing the SBC/T5 would be a step backwards IF better performance were my only reason for hot rodding cars. However, Hot Rodding ( and customizing to a greater extent) a car is also about ones' self expression and creating the "perfect" car that the individual desires irregardless of performance. While many of our forefathers in this great hobby stripped cars down and built bigger engines all in the name of speed and performance, they also incorporated other modifications for no other reason except expressing individuality.. My desire to run a 37-48 flathead is not based on performance(although it does perfom better that a stock 21 stud flattie or 4 banger that a 34 might have had) but base on what I perceive the perfect Hot Rod should be. Some would agree,it is a step back into the stone age but if I was only concerned with better performance in a vehicle why would I be messing with an 80 year old car in the first place?. Wouldn't I be better off just buying a newer Corvette and have the up-most in speed, braking, cornering, etc. etc etc.? Nah, I would't do that but just trying to make a point.

Thats a fair point, but you wouldn't be hotrod categorized. I like the way your approaching this build.
My old 36 coupe had a 42 100 horse flattie, hydraulic brakes and a set of adaptor hubs with 4 1/2 bolt pattern just to change wheels when it suited. If wearing the original, I always thought i was just driving a vintage car, but with some decent rubber filling out the rear fenders, well. Now I was driving a hotrod. A flattie with straight pipes. Hard to beat.

Do the body work necessary to fix damage and rust and then prime or paint!

How about a trade? I have a '33 Tudor Sedan with a 390 Cadillac with dual quads and a mag, 4 speed, and a Quick change. It's certifiably a handfull at full throttle but drives nice with restraint. But I'd gladly swap for the SBC powered Coupe................Shit mines even got all the door handles and you could keep your fenders.
