Anybody got any recommendation for decent 34 Ford headlights? I,ve tried different bulbs with a slight improvement but still not good. I was told you can get some sort of new reflectors that make a vast difference??
Yes,you can get them big things to work now days ,if you want to look copycat trendy! But the real hotrod history is,from WW2 on,hotrodders used 7 inch seal beams, not old junk that didn't work well {we put the big lights in the trash can; The 7in. sealbeams were a Quantum leap in lighting the road, plus most States in the USA made it law, that you had to up date to 7in. sealbeams {they sold 7in, kits to put them inside the big buckets too. Most hotrod guys really like the new smallbuckets> Looked more aero/faster=speedy vs big buckets just looked old ugly slow. Some time in the 1970s big old stock lights, were seen on restored old cars, and to someone who,,,,didn't know hotrod history or why things were done,he fell in love with big old stock light. Then a few others saw the same way n copyed { became treandy BS,but never was how we did it }. Got so trendy to copycat, new *bulb n refles. were made for old **** that didn't work well and after a time all new fake brand new big light were sold to those who love the big lights. None of the new better bulb or even new fake big light that now work, changes real history=That they were poor and replaced by 7in sealbeams= are seen on hotrods after WW2 through the golden age of hotrods. So ya,do what you like,,be copycat trendy guy,or show you now know what they are! After all, those big lights are only ugly if you know better. Me,I'm old,now in my mid 80s,I was building hotrods in the 1950s an on,,,I know this stuff first hand. So join real,or be trendy, its your rod,do what you want. P*** along some facts when you can.. or just be trendy copycat. By the way, I love the look of what I see, on the rest of your awesome cool hotrod!!
I put in pre-focused LED bulbs in mine. They work quite well and don’t really change the appearance. There are differences in bulbs and in my case they are 6 volt. They are not very cheap. I know that this is heresy on this site, but the traditional ****py headlights never were great to me.
I've used the revised reflectors produced by Bob Drake in both '34 commercial headlights and the slightly smaller ones for '35-'36 commercial lights. They work very well. Unfortunately, I believe they are no longer available .
I Like my headlights like I like ****s, big, on high beam but not too bouncy. I also have Drakes reflectors in mine and upgraded bulbs. No, it isn't like driving a new car but if they are aimed correctly (and you ned to adjust your lens on the left as it is not straight) they do an adequate job. One of other cars is a 68 Olds and my 34 lights the road just as well as the old T3s in the 442.
I get hate mail every time I hang a set of these big *** '34 Commercials on something, but I do it anyway. I like the Drake reflectors with halogen plug in bulbs. And, sometimes, I stick turn signals in 'em. -Abone.
Even if the haters wanted to pay the bills I wouldn’t change my stuff to please anyone. And neither should anyone else.
